New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, on Saturday, warned the Central Government of a 'catastrophic problem' if it did not provide money directly in the hands of poor and vulnerable people of our country who have worst affected by the coronavirus pandemic which lead to a nationwide lockdown, saying that the country is 'staring at economic storm' which will likely to 'overshadow' the ongoing health crisis.

Congress MP addressed regional media via video conferencing in which he urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reconsider his Government's stimulus package of Rs 20 lakh crore and implement NYAY Yojana immediately to give financial support to the vulnerable sections of the society.

"Today, our poor people, our migrant labourers are walking home with empty stomach. I am requesting PM Modi ti reconsider his stimulus package and directly transfer money in the bank accounts of these poor people and farmers as well as MGNREGA workers for next 200 days, as these people are the future of our country," he said.

As Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is making announcements regarding this stimulus package of Rs 20 lakh crores in tranche, Gandhi called it a 'package of loans' which is not providing any sort of financial relief to the poor people.

"These vulnerable people need money in their hands, not debt. If we don't consider it, then it will become a catastrophic problem," he added.

The Congress leader also mentioned that both demand as well as supply in our country has got affected due to the pandemic, which needs to get started again.

"In short term, Government needs to fire demand, as well as protect vulnerable people from the health crisis. In medium term, give financial support to small and medium businesses. There should be a clear cut policy for creating employment," he asserted.

While mentioning about numerous tragedies occurring in the country, due to which many migrants have also lost their lives, Rahul Gandhi said that the lockdown should be lifted 'intelligently' without sacrificing vulnerable people, as it is the primary duty for everyone.

He said, "There is a false choice between livelihood and people's health. We need to lift lockdown as well as revive our economy, while taking care of those at risk. This is what planning all about."

On the issue of strengthening MGNREGA, in this period of crisis, Rahul Gandhi suggested that the only way to protect migrants in villages is to cover them under MGNREGA scheme and in cities, they should be covered under NYAY Yojana. He also mentioned that if Government want then it can also implement it temporarily and even change its name from NYAY to something else.States are continuously complaining about not getting enough funds from the central government in a way to help them financially for fighting against COVID-19.

Speaking over the matter, Gandhi said, "States should get support from Centre because only States can lead and implement the fight against COVID-19, while the role of Central government is to manage. However, there is may be a different strategy for the Government to fight against this crisis in a Centralized manner."

On Railway Minister Piyush Goyal's allegations over opposition ruled states for not giving NOCs to the Shramik Special Trains, Rahul Gandhi said that it was the Congress party which made the suggestions at first place. "Our first priority should be to send these migrants back to their home states safely and their needs to be taken care of," he added.
