The new coronavirus cases reported in India in a span of 24 hours remained below 45,000, even as the total COVID-19 caseload inched closer to 80 lakh, the Union health ministry said on Wednesday.

The country's COVID-19 caseload mounted to 79,90,322 with 43,893 fresh cases being reported in a day, while the death toll climbed to 1,20,010 with 508 new fatalities, the ministry data updated at 8 am showed.

A total of 72,59,509 people have recuperated from COVID-19 so far, pushing the national recovery rate to 90.85 per cent, while the case fatality rate stands at 1.50 per cent.  

The active cases of coronavirus infections remained below 7 lakh for six days in a row, it said. 

There are 6,10,803 active cases of coronavirus infection in the country as on date, which comprises 7.64 per cent of the total caseload, the data stated. 

India's COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23 and 40 lakh on September 5. It went past 50 lakh on September 16, 60 lakh on September 28 and crossed 70 lakh on October 11.

According to ICMR, a cumulative total of 10,54,87,680 samples have been tested up to October 27, with 10,66,786 samples tested on Tuesday.

The 508 latest fatalities include 115from Maharashtra, 58 from West Bengal,44 each from Delhi and Karnataka, 36 from Uttar Pradeshand27from Tamil Nadu.

The total 1,20,010 deaths reported so far in the country include

43,463 from Maharashtra followed by 10,991 from Karnataka,10,983 from Tamil Nadu,6,940from Uttar Pradesh,6,625 from Andhra Pradesh,6,604from West Bengal,6,356from Delhi, 4,138 from Punjab and3,695from Gujarat.

The health ministry stressed that more than 70 per cent of the deaths occurred due to comorbidities.

"Our figures are being reconciled with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)," the ministry said on its website, adding that state-wise distribution of figures is subject to further verification and reconciliation.

Aizawl sees surge in cases, total lockdown imposed

With a surge in Covid-19 cases, a weeklong total lockdown was enforced in the Aizawl Municipal Council area from Tuesday to check the spread of the disease in the state capital, officials said.

A Mizoram government health official said that many Covid cases with untraceable contacts have been found in the past few days, forcing the government to take the step.

The official said that at least 34 people, including two infants, have tested positive for Covid-19 since Monday in Aizawl, Mamit, Siaha and Lawngtlai districts with 30 cases alone found in Aizawl.

"The recent increase of Covid-19 cases with untraceable contacts and the increase in the number of symptomatic patients within the AMC area is a cause of concern for public health authorities, as this trend is considered as a signs of community spread," the official said.

Till Tuesday night, Mizoram had recorded 2,527 positive cases but 2,224 patients have recovered and there are 303 active cases. Of the total cases, including 529 women patients, 1,671 people were from Aizawl district alone.

Maha situation improves, but fresh spurt in fatalities

Maharashtra's Covid-19 situation continued to improve but the state witnessed a fresh spurt in deaths, a day after dropping to the May levels, though fatalities in Mumbai decreased significantly, health officials said here on Tuesday.

The state witnessed 115 deaths on Tuesday, higher than the 84 reported on Monday, taking the state's Covid death toll to 43,463.

The state also recorded 5,363 new cases - around one-fourth compared to the peak single-day tally of 24,886 recorded on September 11) - taking the state's tally to 16,54,028.

The state's recovery rate increased from 89.02 per cent to 89.39 per cent, while the current mortality rate stood at 2.63 per cent.

Simultaneously, another chunk of 7,836 fully recovered patients returned home - taking the total number of discharged patients to 14,78,496 till date, much higher than the 131,544 active cases currently present in the state.

As per Tuesday's figures, there was one death roughly every 13 minutes and 223 new cases added every hour to the state's tally.

Of the 115 deaths reported on Tuesday, Mumbai led the chart with 23 fatalities, followed by Pune (22), Latur (9), Nagpur (8), Nashik (5), Thane, Raigad, Solapur, Satara, Kolhapur and Chandrapur (4 each), Jalgaon and Wardha (3 each), Ahmednagar, Jalna, Beed, Yavatmal and Bhandara (2 each), and Sangli, Sindhudurg, Parbhani, Osmanabad, Buldhana and Washim (1 each).

Karnataka's new cases down; recoveries up

New Covid cases declined to 3,691 and recoveries increased to 7,740 in a day across Karnataka.

"With 3,691 fresh cases, the state's Covid tally stood at 8,09,638, including 71,330 active cases, while recoveries increased to 7,27,298 till date, with 7,740 discharged on Monday," said the state health bulletin on Tuesday.

The state registered 44 deaths due to the infection in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll to 10,991.

Bengaluru recorded 1,874 fresh cases in a day, increasing its Covid tally to 3,29,250, including 46,628 active cases, while 2,78,843 recovered, with 4,446 discharges on Monday.

With 24 succumbing to the infection, the city's death toll rose to 3,778 so far.

Of the recoveries in districts, 288 were in Mysuru, 276 in Mandya and 260 in Dakshina Kannada.

Gujarat sees 992 cases, five deaths

Gujarat on Tuesday saw 992 more coronavirus cases, taking its tally to 1,69,073, while the death toll rose to 3,698 with five more succumbing.

In October so far, the state has added 30,498 cases at a daily average of 1,146.

A total of 1,238 patients were discharged, taking the total to 1,51,888, while the state has 13,487 active cases, out of which 64 critical patients are on ventilator.

Surat saw 225 new cases, Ahmedabad 170, Vadodara 114, Rajkot 94 and Gandhinagar 46.

Mehsana followed with 35, Patan 33, Jamnagar 26, Sabarkantha 25, Bharuch 20, Junagadh and Surendranagar 18 each, Amreli and Banaskantha 17 each, Anand and Panchmahals 13 each, Bhavnagar, Kutch, Morbi, and Narmada 12 each, Gir-Somnath, Mahisagar, and Kheda eight each, Dahod and Chotta Udepur seven each, Devbhumi Dwarka six, Aravalli, Tapi and Navsari four each, Valsad two and Botad and Porbandar with one each.

Two deaths each were reported from Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, while one died in Surat.

SDMC doctor dies of COVID-19

A 41-year-old doctor working with the South Delhi Municipal Corporation died of COVID-19 on Tuesday, officials said.

The doctor was working in SDMC's Najafgarh Zone since 2008 and was posted at Maternity and Child Welfare Centre Rangpuri, Mahipal Pur and had joined COVID-19 duty since April, they said.

While on COVID-19 duty, he had tested positive for COVID-19 on October 13 and was under home isolation, a senior official said.

"He had difficulty in breathing and was admitted in Venkateshwar Hospital, Dwarka on October 19 and further shifted to Medanta Hospital, Gurgaon on October 20, as his condition was deteriorating. He was put on ventilator, fought bravely but died today morning," the civic official said.

He belonged to Bihar's Darbhanga district, having a humble family background. He is survived by his wife, two children, aged 10 and 7 years. The doctor was the only earning member of his family and his old parents were totally dependent on him, officials said.

Sikkim reports 23 new cases, two more deaths

Sikkim's COVID-19 cases went up to 3,863 after 23 more positive cases were detected in the past 24 hours, while two fresh fatalities took the death toll to 67, an official said on Tuesday.

The Himalayan state has 262 active cases, while 3,452 patients have recovered and 82 others have migrated out.

The official said that East Sikkim district reported 22 fresh cases, while West Sikkim accounted for one.

Sikkim has tested 55,898 samples for COVID-19 so far, he said.

21 new cases push tally of Andamans to 4,274

The COVID-19 tally of Andaman and Nicobar Islands rose to 4,274 on Wednesday as 21 more people tested positive for the infection, a health official said.

Five new patients have travel history, while 16 infections were detected during contact tracing, he said.

Twenty-two more people have been cured of the disease, the official said.

The Union territory now has 197 active coronavirus cases, while 4,019 people have recovered from the disease and 58 patients have succumbed to the infection so far, he said.

The administration has so far sent 84,308 samples for COVID-19 tests, of which 84,298 reports have been received and 10 are awaited, the official added.

COVID-19 LIVE : Jharkhand's tally crosses 1 lakh-mark; death toll mounts to 876

Ranchi: Jharkhand's COVID-19 tally crossed the 1 lakh-mark on Wednesday as 318 more people tested positive for the infection, a health official said.         

The new cases have taken the state's caseload to 1,00,224, he said.         

Four more people have succumbed to the infection, pushing the state's coronavirus death toll to 876, the official said.        

Jharkhand now has 5,474 active cases, while 93,874 people have been cured of the disease so far, he said.         

The state has tested 22,162 samples for COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, the official said.
