89 new COVID-19 cases take Meghalaya tally to 4,447

Eighty-nine more people tested positive for COVID-19 in Meghalaya on Friday, taking the state's tally to 4,447, a senior health official said.

Two more fatalities pushed the death toll to 34.

At present, the state has 1,976 active cases, he said.

Altogether 95 patients recovered from COVID-19 on Friday, taking the total number of people who have been cured of the disease in Meghalaya to 2,437, Health Services director Aman War said.

J-K COVID-19 caseload past 60,000-mark; death toll reaches 966

The number of COVID-19 cases in Jammu and Kashmir zoomed past the 60,000-mark on Friday as the union territory recorded 1,330 fresh cases, while 15 more fatalities pushed the death toll to 966, officials said.

It was for the 16th consecutive day that the number of fresh cases have crossed 1000 in a 24-hour period.

The UT recorded 1,330 fresh cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours - 672 in Jammu and 658 in the Kashmir Valley," the officials said.

The cumulative figure of positive cases in Jammu and Kashmir has now gone past the 60,000-mark to 61,041.

Srinagar district reported the highest number of 237 new cases, followed by 221 in Jammu district, the officials said.

There are 20,770 active cases of coronavirus, while 39,305 patients have recovered so far, they said.

A total of 15 deaths took place in the past 24 hours in the UT 10 in Jammu and five in the valley - taking the death toll to 966, the officials said.

4,127 fresh COVID cases push Delhi's tally to over 2.38 lakh; death toll mounts to 4,907

Delhi's coronavirus tally breached the 2.38 lakh mark with 4,127 fresh cases, while the death toll mounted to 4,907 on Friday, authorities said.

Thirty fresh fatalities were recorded in the last 24 hours, they added.

According to the Delhi government's health bulletin, a total of 61,037 tests were conducted the previous day.

The total number of cases stands at 2,38,828, out of which 2,01,671 patients have either recovered, migrated out or been discharged while there are 32,250 active cases, as per the bulletin.

The positivity rate stands at 6.76 per cent. The number of containment zones has increased to 1,751, the bulletin said. 

With 4,432 fresh coronavirus cases, Delhi's caseload went over 2.34 lakh on Thursday while the death toll reached 4,877 with 38 fresh fatalities. 

On Wednesday, the national capital had registered a record single-day spike of 4,473 COVID-19 cases, taking the city's infection tally to over 2.30 lakh, while 33 more deaths were reported.

The previous highest single-day spike of 4,321 cases was recorded on September 12.

Kerala reports 4,000 plus fresh COVID-19 cases for second day in row; Toll crosses 500

For the second successive day, Kerala reported over 4,000 COVID-19 cases on Friday, taking the total infection count to 1,26,381 while the toll crossed the 500 mark.

At least 102 health workers were among the 4,167 new positive cases and 12 more people succumbed to the disease as the toll climbed to 501, Health Minister K K Shailaja said.

On Thursday, the state had recorded its single-day highest of 4,351 cases as fresh cases crossed the 4,000 mark for the first time.

51 new cases push Nagaland's COVID-19 tally to 5,357

Nagaland reported 51 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, pushing the tally in the state to 5,357, Health Minister S Pangnyu Phom said.

The state currently has 1,213 active cases.

"Out of 544 results received, 51 positive cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed 23 in Kohima, 20 in Dimapur, 4 in Mokokchung, 2 in Mon and 1 each in Peren and Tuensang districts," the minister tweeted.

As many as 4,108 patients have been cured of the disease, 15 have died and 21 migrated to other states, a health department official said.

The recovery rate of COVID-19 patients in the state is 76.68 per cent.

A total of 72,596 samples have been tested for COVID-19 in Tripura so far, the official said.

Himachal Pradesh records 10 deaths, 172 fresh cases; infection tally now 11,363

Ten people died from the novel coronavirus in Himachal Pradesh on Friday and the state's infection tally went up to 11,363 with 172 fresh cases.

So far, the state has reported 107 deaths due to COVID-19.

273 new COVID-19 cases, six deaths in Tripura

At least 273 people tested positive for COVID-19 in Tripura on Friday, pushing the tally in the state to 20,972, a health department official said.

Six more fatalities took the death toll to 228.

West Tripura district, of which state capital Agartala is a part, has accounted for 127 of the 228 COVID-19 deaths.

The northeastern state currently has 7,162 active coronavirus cases, while 13,559 people have recovered from the disease. Twenty-three patients have migrated to other states.

A total of 3,47,962 samples have been tested for COVID-19 in Tripura so far, the official added.

UP reports 98 more COVID-19 deaths; tally climbs to 3.42 lakh

Uttar Pradesh reported 98 more fatalities due to COVID-19 on Friday, taking the death toll to 4,869, while 6,494 fresh cases took the infection tally to 3,42,788.

The state now has 67,825 active COVID-19 cases and 2,70,094 people have recovered from the disease till date, Additional Chief Secretary (Medical and Health) Amit Mohan Prasad said.

Former Guj CM Keshubhai Patel tests positive

Former Gujarat Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel has tested positive for novel coronavirus, health officials said on Friday.

He underwent a COVID-19 test as one of his attendants was detected with the infection on Thursday after which samples of the former were taken for antigen and the RT-PCR process, said Gandhinagar Civil Hospital Superintendent Dr Niyati Lakhani.

"His antigen test returned positive while the results for the RT-PCR test is yet to come," Lakhani informed.

The 92-year-old leader's family said he is in home isolation in Gandhinagar.

Kolkata Police DCP tests COVID-19 positive, admitted to hospital

A Deputy Commissioner of Kolkata Police has been admitted to hospital after she tested positive for COVID-19, police sources said on Friday.

Deputy Commissioner of South East Division of Kolkata Police Debasmita Das was taken to the hospital on Thursday where she is undergoing treatment, they said.

"She is undergoing treatment and we are keeping a close watch on her health conditions," hospital sources said.

The IPS officer was having some health-related issues and was on leave since last Saturday, sources in Kolkata Police said.

Incidentally, Kolkata Police Commissioner Anuj Sharma has been under home isolation since last week after he tested positive for COVID-19.

A few IPS officers and other policemen in West Bengal have also tested positive for the virus.

There are around 3,000 policemen in the state who have been infected by coronavirus.

Maharashtra minister Nitin Raut tests positive  

Maharashtra Energy Minister Nitin Raut on Friday said he has tested positive for COVID-19, becoming the ninth member of the state cabinet to contract the infection.

Raut (63), who is also the working president of the state Congress, tweeted about his diagnosis.

"I have tested positive for COVID-19. I would request all those who had come in contact with me to get themselves tested as a precautionary measure," he said.

Raut is the ninth minister in the MVA government to test positive for COVID-19.

Earlier, ministers Jitendra Awhad (housing), Ashok Chavan (PWD), Dhananjay Munde (social justice), Sunil Kedar (animal husbandry), Balasaheb Patil (cooperation), Aslam Shaikh (textile), Abdul Sattar (MoS-rural development) and Vishwajit Kadam (MoS-cooperation) had tested positive for COVID-19.

Odisha reports 4,180 new cases, 13 fresh fatalities

Odisha's COVID-19 tally rose to 1,71,341 on Friday as 4,180 more people tested positive for the infection, while 13 fresh fatalities pushed the state's coronavirus death toll to 682, a health official said.

As many as 2,466 new cases were detected in quarantine centres, while 1,714 people tested positive for the infection during contact tracing, he said.

105 inmates test positive in UP jail

The Pilibhit jail in Uttar Pradesh has reported 105 cases of Covid-19 among the inmates. The jail has a capacity for 802 prisoners but has 946 inmates at the moment.

According to the district jail superintendent Anoop Manmav Shastri, a team of medical officers from the district government hospital visited the prison complex and identified 19 symptomatic infected prisoners, out of 105, for their shifting to L1 facility at the state L. H.Ayurvedic College.

Two prisoners among the positive ones had been released on bail three days ago while the remaining 84 asymptomatic prisoners had been kept in an isolation ward within the district jail complex where they would get proper medical treatment, Shastri said.

Prior to this, the jail administration had arranged the sampling of 100 prisoners on September 7. They were selected randomly from 13 barracks. Of these, four had tested positive on September 10.

96,424 new infections pushes India's tally to over 52 lakh

India's tally raced past 52 lakh with96,424 people testing positive in a day, while the number of people who have recuperated from the disease rose to 41,12,551 on Friday, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The total coronavirus cases mounted to52,14,677, while the death toll climbed to84,372 with the virus claiming 1,174 lives in a span of 24 hours, the data updated at 8 am showed.

The COVID-19 case fatality rate due to the coronavirus infection has further dropped to 1.62 per cent.

There are 10,17,754 active cases of COVID-19 in the country which comprises 19.52 per cent of the total caseload, the data stated.

India's COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and it went past 50 lakh on September 16.

According to the ICMR, a cumulative total of 6,15,72,343 samples has been tested up to September 17 with 10,06,615 samples being tested on Thursday.

The Union Health Ministry on Friday said that 60 per cent of the country's active coronavirus cases are concentrated across five worst-hit States. It also said that there are 13 States and Union Territories that have less than 5,000 active cases of COVID-19. 

"Around 60 per cent of the Active Cases are concentrated in only five most affected States. There are 13 States and UTs that even today have less than 5,000 Active Cases," the Ministry tweeted.
