Single day surge of 1725 COVID-19 cases in Kerala

Kerala reported the highest single-day surge of 1,725 COVID-19 cases on Monday, taking the infection tally to 46,140 while 13 deaths took the toll to 169. Health minister K K Shailaja said Thiruvananthapuram reported the highest number of 461, followed by Malappuram with 306.

5 more COVID-19 deaths in Ladakh, toll rises to 14

Five more patients died of coronavirus in Ladakh, taking the death toll due to the disease in the union territory to 14. Kargil district recorded four new deaths, while one COVID-19 patient breathed his last in Leh, the officials said.

So far, Kargil has reported eight deaths due to the disease and Leh six.

As many as 17 inmates of Dhanbad Divisional Jail in Jharkhand have tested positive for novel coronavirus. Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Dhanbad Raj Maheswaram said, rapid antigen tests were conducted on 76 prisoners on Sunday and 17 results came out positive.

Focussing on aggressive testing, India has surpassed three crore COVID-19 tests with the aim to keep both positivity rate and fatality rate low, Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry said on Monday.

"Focussing on timely and aggressive testing, India has exceeded 3 crore tests. Enhanced and timely testing is not only keeping the positivity rate low but also the fatality rate low," Union Health Ministry tweeted.

"Aggressive testing leads to early identification and isolation of COVID-19 positive cases. This coupled with efficient clinical treatment brings the fatality rate down," it added.

COVID-19 LIVE: India records highest single-day recoveries, recovery rate crosses 72%

Hyderabad: India's COVID-19 tally rose to 26,47,663 on Monday with a single-day spike of 57,981 infections, while the death toll crossed the 50,000 marks with 941 fresh fatalities, according to the Union Health Ministry data. 

The recoveries surged to 19,19,842, pushing the recovery rate to 72.51 per cent, the data updated at 8 am showed. 

The death toll due to coronavirus infection climbed to 50,921 with 941 people succumbing to the disease in a span of 24 hours. 

The case fatality rate has declined to 1.92 per cent. There are 6,76,900 active cases of coronavirus infection in the country. According to ICMR, a total of 3,00,41,400 samples have been tested up to August 16 with 7,31,697 samples being tested on Sunday.
