Kerala records 720 new COVID-19 cases, one death

Thiruvananthapuram:  Kerala on Tuesday reported 720 fresh cases of COVID-19, taking the number of infected people in the state to 13,994, while 1,62,444 people are under observation in the state.

Of the new cases, 528 were infected from their contacts, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told the media after the daily COVID-19 evaluation meet.

"Sources of at least 34 cases are yet to be identified...82 came from abroad, 54 came from other states...17 health workers,29 defence security corps personnel, four ITBP personnel and five personnel belonging to other paramilitary forces were also affected.

The state also reported one death today," he said.

The chief minister condoled the death of the 72- year-old woman, Victoria, a native of Pulluvila in the district, who succumbed to coronavirus.

"She was also suffering from other age-related ailments," Vijayan said.

He also said 274 people were cured on Tuesday.

Providing the district-wise break-up in the COVID- 19 cases, Vijayan said Thiruvananthapuram reported 151 cases, while Kollam 85.

Ernakulam reported 80 cases, Malappuram 61, Kannur 57, Palakkad 46, Alappuzha 46, Kasaragod 40, Pathanamthitta 40, Kozhikode 39, Kottayam 39, Thrissur 19 andWayand 17.

The chief minister said at least 19,524 samples were tested within the last 24 hours.

"At least 8,277 persons are in isolation wards in various hospitals across the state and a total of 8,056 are under treatment," Vijayan said.

The state government said 353 regions have been categorised as hot spots as of now.

Thiruvananthapuram, the capital district, has 2,201 positive case, the highest in the state, followed by Ernakulam with 909.

Alappuzha district has 617 cases, while Malappuram and Kollam 599 and 555 cases respectively.

25 new COVID-19 cases in Sikkim; tally rises to 330

Gangtok: Sikkim on Tuesday reported 25 new COVID-19 cases, taking the state's tally to 330, a top Health department official said.

Director General (DG)-cum-Secretary, Health, Dr Pema T Bhutia said that 24 persons tested positive in East Sikkim, while South Sikkim reported one case.

All the 25 people have been admitted to the isolation ward of STNM hospital, he said.

Bhutia said of the total 330 COVID-19 cases, 222 are active cases as 108 patients have been cured of the disease.

East Sikkim has accounted for the highest number of COVID-19 cases at 255, followed by 45 in South Sikkim, 29 in West Sikkim and one in North Sikkim.

Sikkim so far has conducted 17,564 tests for COVID-19, the official said.

COVID-19 death toll rises to 1,229 in UP; infection tally stands at 53,288

Lucknow:  The coronavirus death toll rose to 1,229 in Uttar Pradesh after the state reported 37 fatalities, a statement issued by the state government said on Tuesday.

With as many as 2,128 fresh COVID-19 cases, the state’s infection tally reached 53,288.

The state government, however, put the tally of fresh cases at 2,151.

Of the 37 fatalities, as many as eight were reported from Kanpur followed by five from Lucknow, four from Moradabad, three from Unnao, two each from Jhansi and Meerut, and one each from Ghaziabad, Varanasi, Rampur, Bulandshahr, Bijnor, Prayagraj, Sant Kabir Nagar, Deoria, Hardoi, Kaushambi, Kannauj, Baghpat and Hamirpur, the statement said.

Among the fresh COVID-19 cases reported from the state, as many as 230 were from Kanpur followed by 212 from Lucknow, 151 from Jhansi, 95 from Varanasi and 90 from Moradabad.

The total number of active coronavirus cases in the state stands at 20,204.

Till now, as many as 31,855 COVID-19 patients have recovered from the viral disease, the statement added.

Mumbai cop succumbs to COVID-19, force toll 52

Mumbai: A 53-year-old Mumbai police constable died due to COVID-19 in the early hours of Tuesday, taking the toll in the metropolis' force to 52, an official said.

The COVID-19 victim, a resident of Navi Mumbai, was attached to Tilaknagar police station and was admitted in Somaiya Hospital in Chunabhatti on June 22 after falling ill, he informed.

He died due to COVID-19 and pneumonia as per doctors, the official added.

1,349 fresh COVID-19 cases take Delhi''s tally to 1,25,096; death toll climbs to 3,690

New Delhi: Delhi recorded 1,349 fresh COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, taking the tally in the city to over 1.25 lakh, while the death toll mounted to 3,690, authorities said.

After reporting new cases in the range of 1,000 to 2,000 for nine consecutive days, fresh infections in the national capital had dipped to 954 on Monday.

Twenty-seven fatalities were recorded in the last 24 hours, according to a Delhi health department bulletin issued on Tuesday.

The number of active cases stood at 15,288, marginally up from 15,166 on Monday.

The national capital had reported its highest single-day spike of 3,947 on June 23.

The Tuesday bulletin said the death toll from coronavirus infection has risen to 3,690 and the total number of cases mounted to 1,25,096.

The toll stood at 3,663 on Monday.

AP reports nearly 5,000 fresh COVID-19 cases; 62 deaths

Amaravati: Shooting further up with the addition of nearly 5,000 cases, Andhra Pradesh's COVID-19 tally touched 55,773 while the state saw 62 deaths, the highest in a day so far, on Tuesday.

The latest bulletin said 1,232 patients also got cured and discharged from hospitals as the cumulative recoveries rose to 22,896. The state now has 32,119 active cases.

The COVID-19 toll in the state now stood at 758 with 62 fresh deaths.

Of the total 4,944 positives reported in the last 24 hours ended at 9 AM, as many as 1,581 were found through rapid antigen, the bulletin said.

The state so far completed 13,86,274 tests.

In the last 24 hours, East Godavari district registered ten deaths, Visakhapatnam nine, Chittoor eight and Srikakulam seven.

Anantapuramu and West Godavari reported six deaths each, Guntur and Prakasam five each, Kurnool four, Kadapa and Vizianagaram one death each, according to the bulletin.

COVID-19 positive students can write Karnataka CET exams: Karnataka Deputy CM

Bengaluru: In the wake of  COVID 19, the pandemic situation in the Karnataka, the state government has decided to promote all intermediate semester students of degree and post-graduation courses without examinations and also announced that the students who have been tested positive for coronavirus also can take part in the examination.

Speaking to media persons here, Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, C. N. Ashwath Narayan said that the decisions were taken after consulting educationists and university vice-chancellors taking into consideration the well-being, safety and future of students.

" As state will start CET examination for 12th students from 30 to 31 July 2020, all students can take part in examination and quarantine relaxations is being given of 96 hours for international and other state students and parents. Students who have been tested positive for virus can also write the exams," he said.

The exams will be held on the scheduled dates -- July 30 and July 31. At least 1.94 lakh students have enrolled for the entrance exam, Dr Ashwath Narayan said.

As per the Standard Operating Procedure, "no candidate who is COVID-19 positive shall be denied an opportunity to appear in the examinations."

"SOP, preparedness, sanitization, masks, the thermal screening will be taken care of. Emergency services, paramedical staff will be there. Exams will be held with all safety and precautions," the minister told reporters.  

The students appearing for the examinations are required to inform the authorities about their COVID-19 status in advance so that the necessary arrangements can be made. The students are also required to produce a medical certificate. They will be transported between the exam center and hospital by designated 108 ambulances.

Separate rooms will be provided to COVID-19 candidates and a medical team will be stationed at those exam centers. The exam hall will be disinfected as per protocol.

Meanwhile, the capital of Karnataka has recorded over 1,500 fresh cases today. At least 3,648 people have tested positive for the virus in the state.  

The deadly virus has claimed 72 lives, taking the death toll in the state to 1,403.  

The active number of COVID-19 cases in the state have increased to 42,216.

No more lockdown in Karnataka: CM BS Yediyurappa

The Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa on Tuesday confirmed that the lockdown will not be extended in the state.

"There won't be any extension of lockdown in Bengaluru urban & rural districts," Yediyurappa said to media persons.

"There'll be no lockdown from tomorrow, people need to get back to work, the economy is also very important. We have to fight COVID19 while maintaining stable economy. Lockdown is not the solution, now restrictions will be placed only in containment zones," he added.

10 new COVID-19 cases reported in Himachal Pradesh's Sirmaur

Sirmaur: A total of 10 new COVID-19 cases have been reported in Govindgarh area of Sirmaur district in Himachal Pradesh, informed the Deputy Commissioner of Sirmaur, Dr RK Pruthi. "Out of 51 samples that were sent for testing on Monday, 41 tested negative and 10 tested positive for coronavirus," Dr Pruthi said.

He further said, "Out of 10 positive cases, there is a girl (8), a boy (11), five women aged between 29 years to 58 years and three men between the age of 23 years to 34 years." With 10 more COVID-19 cases reported in Himachal Pradesh, the tally of coronavirus cases has reached 1,641 in the state on Tuesday.

According to the official data, there are 547 active cases, 1,067 recoveries, and 10 deaths in the state. Around 15 patients have also migrated from the state

Odisha's COVID-19 death toll climbs to 103 with 6 more fatalities

Bhubaneswar: The COVID-19 death toll in Odisha crossed the 100-mark on Tuesday, with six more fatalities taking the total to 103 in the state, a health department official said.

At least 647 more people have tested positive for the disease, pushing the tally to 18,757, he said.

All six fatalities were recorded from as many districts in the state.

Puttige mutt chief tests positive for COVID-19 in Karnataka

Mangaluru:  Swami Sugunendra Teertha, head of the Puttige mutt, one of the Ashta Mutts of Udupi in Karnataka, has tested positive for coronavirus and was admitted to a hospital on Tuesday, hospital sources said.  

The seer had voluntarily gone for a test as he was having a fever and after the result returned positive, he was admitted to the KMC Hospital at Manipal near Udupi. His health condition was stable, hospital sources said.  

The swami's disciples and the devotees of the mutt offered prayers seeking his early recovery. The Ashta Mutts are a group of eight religious institutions established by 13th-century philosopher Madhwacharya in and around the famous Udupi Sri Krishna temple.  

As on Sunday, Udupi district has reported 2,321 COVID-19 cases with 661 being active.

50 fresh cases in Arunachal; count rises to 790

Fifty more people, including nine Army jawans and six police personnel, have tested positive for COVID-19 in Arunachal Pradesh, taking the northeastern state's tally to 790 on Tuesday, a senior health official said.

Thirty-four fresh cases were reported in the Capital Complex region, 10 in the border district of Tawang, five in Lower Subansiri and one in West Siang, he said.

Nine Army jawans are among those infected in Tawan district situated along the India-China border, State Surveillance Officer, Dr L Jampa, said.

Six police personnel from Naharlagun police station are among the 34 new patients in the Capital Complex region, he said.

Four new patients from Lower Subansiri district and the one from West Siang are returnees from other states, Dr Jampa said.

All barring six new patients are asymptomatic and they were shifted to COVID-19 care centres, he said.

Three more persons from Lower Subansiri district recovered from COVID-19 on Monday and were advised 14-day home isolation upon their release from hospitals, the official said.

Of the 790 cases in the state, 502 are active while 285 people have recovered and three patients have died, Dr Jampa said.

The Capital Complex region comprising Itanagar, Naharlagun, Nirjuli and Banderdewa areas has registered the highest number of cases in the state at 306, followed by Changlang (33), Namsai (30), East Siang (24), Papum Pare (22), Lower Subansiri (16), Lower Siang (14) and Leparada and Tawang (10 each), he said.

Covid-19 death toll crosses 100-mark in Odisha

The death toll due to Covid-19 has crossed the 100 figure mark in Odisha, to a total of 103 with the death of six more patients in the last 24 hours, informed the health department on Tuesday.

The deaths were reported from Kendrapara, Gajapati, Khurda, Jagatsinghpur, Rayagada and Cuttack districts.

The state also reported 647 new COVID-19 positive cases in the last 24 hours, taking the tally to 18,757 in the state.

Out of the 647 fresh cases, 431 were reported from quarantine centres and 216 are local contacts, said the department.

The highest positive cases were detected from the hotspot Ganjam (225), followed by Cuttack (84), Khordha (68) and Rayagada (47).

With this, the number of active cases rose to 5,715 while 12,909 people have recovered from the disease so far.

After crossing record 40K, cases dip by 3K in 24 hrs

After an alarming rise over 40,000 cases in a day, India on Tuesday heaved a sigh of relief as the spike in fresh cases showed a dip of around 3,000 with Health Ministry data showing 37,148 new cases being reported in past 24 hours.

India's COVID tally reached 11,55,191 on Tuesday and with 587 fresh deaths, the toll touched 27,497.

As many as 7,24,577 have been cured, which is almost twice the number of active patients at 4,02,529 as the recovery rate stood at 62.7 per cent.

On Monday, the country had crossed the 11-lakh mark, adding over one lakh cases within three days. The highest spike in cases were reported from Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.

Karnataka, the new hotspot state, crossed 67,000 cases, as Maharashtra remained the worst-hit state, with 3,186,95 cases and 12,030 casualties followed by Tamil Nadu with total 1,75,678 cases, and 2,551 deaths.

With 954 new coronavirus cases and 35 deaths in the last 24 hours, the national capital recorded a total tally of 1,23,747 cases and 3,663 deaths.

States with more than 10,000 cases include Karnataka (67,420), Gujarat (49,353), Uttar Pradesh (51,160), Rajasthan (30,390), Madhya Pradesh (23,310), West Bengal (44,769), Haryana (26,858), Andhra Pradesh (53,724), Telangana (46,274), Assam (25,382), Jammu and Kashmir (14,650), Kerala (13,274), Odisha (18,110) and Bihar (27,646).

India continues to be the third worst-hit country after the US and Brazil, and in the last 24 hours, 3,33,395 samples were tested, as the testing lab network continued to expand.

On the global front, the overall number of COVID-19 cases has increased to over 14.6 million, while the deaths were more than 609,000, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Maharashtra COVID cases fall below 9K, MMR tally crosses 2 lakh

Maharashtra's daily Covid-19 cases continued in the upper reaches, scaling the 8,000 mark on Monday, but deaths again dropped below the 200-level even as Mumbai Metropolitan Region crossed the 2 lakh tally, health officials said.

The state notched 8,240 new cases, lower than the peak of 9,518 on July 19, spelling some relief.

The number of deaths in the state dipped from Sunday's 258 to 176 on Monday.

With the fresh fatalities, the state's death toll went up to 12,030, while the total cases touched 318,695 - both highest in the country.

According to Monday's figures, there was one death roughly every 8 minutes and a staggering 343 new cases every hour.

The recovery rate marginally improved from 54.62 per cent a day earlier to 54.92 per cent on Monday, while the current mortality rate stood at 3.77 per cent.

The Health Department said that of the total cases till date, 131,334 are active cases.

On the other hand, 5,460 recovered patients returned home on Monday, taking the total number of discharged patients to 175,029.

For the first time in recent weeks, Pune's daily toll of 42 overshot Mumbai's 41.

Mumbai's toll has risen to 5,755 and the number of corona cases increased by 1,035 to touch 102,423 now.

Apart from Mumbai and Pune, there were 33 deaths in Thane, 21 in Jalgaon, six in Raigad, five in Solapur, four each in Kolhapur and Sangli, three in Aurangabad, two each in Palghar, Satara, Amravati, Buldhana and Nashik, and one each in Dhule, Jalna, Latur, Nanded, Washim, and Wardha. One was from another state.

The MMR (Thane division) continues to see deaths spiral and cases pile up, with the current toll at 8,220 and a staggering 3,789 new cases, pushing up the number of cases to 203,270.

Thane cases have touched 76,749 with 2,069 fatalities to emerge as the second worst-hit district after Mumbai.

Pune district has 57,024 cases, with the death toll at 1,401 on Monday.

The Pune division's death toll has reached 1,872 with the case tally touching 65,286 - but it remains far behind MMR and Thane district.

Nashik division has 919 fatalities and 21,696 cases, followed by Aurangabad division with 439 deaths and 12,303 cases, Akola division with 193 fatalities and 4,833 cases, Kolhapur division with 112 deaths and 4,701 cases, Latur division 121 fatalities and 2,840 cases, and Nagpur division 39 deaths and 3,506 cases.

All the eight divisions recorded fatalities on Monday, while Chandrapur has kept its zero Covid death district status till date, though all divisions and districts in the state have notched fresh cases.

Meanwhile, the number of people sent to home quarantine increased to 765,781, while those in institutional quarantine went down to 45,434 on Monday.

Gujarat sees nearly 1K COVID cases in day, toll rises to 2,167

Gujarat on Monday recorded 998 fresh cases of coronavirus to take its tally to 49,439, while the death toll rose to 2,167 with 20 more deaths.

Of its total tally, the state has seen roughly a third of the cases - 16,796 - within July so far with a daily average of more than 800.

Surat, the new hotspot in the state, is also witnessing a higher count than the preceding day. On Monday, the Diamond City had 284 cases detected, way ahead of Ahmedabad's 193. Vadodara, with 78 cases, was at the third spot.

It was followed by Rajkot with 56, Bhavnagar with 42, Mehsana with 26, Bharuch and Jamnagar with 22 each, Surendranagar and Gandhinagar with 20 each, Junagadh with 19, Patan and Valsad with 17 each, Gir-Somnath, Kutch and Tapi with 16 each, Panchmahals with 15, Amreli, Banaskantha and Kheda with 13 each, Dahod with 12, Mahisagar with 11, Navsari with 10, Botad and Morbi with nine each, Narmada with seven, Anand and Sabarkantha with six each, Aravali with five, Devbhumi Dwarka with three and Chhota Udepur and Porbandar with one case each.

Of Monday's deaths, 11 were reported from Surat, four in Ahmedabad, two each in Vadodara and Navsari and one from Gir-Somnath.

Ahmedabad leads the toll with 1,557 deaths, followed by 273 in Surat, 59 in Vadodara, 37 in Gandhinagar, 24 in Aravalli, 20 in Patan, 17 deaths in Rajkot and Bhavnagar, 16 deaths each in Panchmahals and Banaskantha, 14 deaths each in Mahesana and Kheda, 13 deaths in Anand and 11 have died in Bharuch.

Gujarat's mortality rate has come down a bit to 4.38 per cent, but is still one of the highest in the country.

As many as 12,369 RT-PCR tests were done, the highest number so far in a single day, taking the total figures to 5,48, 989.

Meanwhile, a total of 777 patients were discharged on Monday, taking the number so far to 35,659.

The state has 11,613 active cases, out of which 78 critical patients are still on ventilator and the condition of the rest is stable.

There are presently 4,08,840 people quarantined - 4,06,794 at home and 2,046 in government facilities.

Jammu and Kashmir on Monday recorded 751 fresh Covid-19 cases, taking the Union Territory's tally to 14,650, while there were 10 more deaths.

A statement issued by the Information and Public Relations Department said that of the new cases, 240 were in the Jammu division and 511 in the Kashmir division.

Ten patients succumbed in different hospitals, taking the toll to 254.

With 8,274 patients having completely recovered, the number of active cases is 6,122, out of which 1,207 are in the Jammu division and 4,915 in the Kashmir division.

3,648 new  cases take Karnataka's  COVID tally over 67K

Karnataka registered 3,648 new COVID positive cases, a majority of them emerging from Bengaluru, increasing the state's tally to 67,420 while 72 more succumbed to the virus, an official said on Monday.

"New cases reported from Sunday 5 p.m. to Monday 5 p.m., 3,648," said a health official.

With 1,452 infections, Bengaluru city accounted for the highest number of cases, sending its tally rising to 33,229 cases, out of which 25,574 are active.

Among the new cases, excluding Bengaluru, Ballari accounted for 234 cases, followed by Bengaluru Rural (208), Dharwad (200), Vijayapura (160) and Mysuru (149) among others.

Meanwhile, 72 patients succumbed to the virus across the state, including 31 in Bengaluru itself, taking the total number of deaths to 1,403.

Most of the deceased suffered from Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) and had fever, cough and breathlessness as symptoms. A few fatalities also suffered from Influenza Like Illness (ILI).

On a positive note, 730 patients have been discharged, raising the total discharges to 23,795.

Of the total 67,420 cases, 42,216 are active and 580 of them are in the ICU.

COVID-19 LIVE: 30 States/UTs have positivity rate lower than India average: Health Ministry

With 4,074 new cases in the 24 hours ending 9 a.m. on Monday, Andhra Pradesh's daily COVID tally saw a dip compared to the record high of 5,041 cases reported on Sunday. The total number of cases in the state now stands at 53,724.

As many as 33,580 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours, including 16,195 rapid antigen tests. Till date, 13,49,122 samples have been tested in Andhra Pradesh.

Twelve of the thirteen districts reported COVID cases in triple figures, with Vizianagaram being the sole exception. East Godavari reported the highest tally of 1,068 positive cases, followed by Guntur (596), Kurnool (559) and West Godavari (354).

Other districts that reported high numbers over the previous 24 hours include Anantapur (342), Srikakulam (261), Prakasam (221), Kadapa (152), Krishna (129), Chittoor (116), Visakhapatnam (102) and Nellore (100).

Vizianagaram with 52 cases was the only district to report double-digit COVID cases on Monday.

Monday's figures also featured the second-highest death toll on a single day. The state reported 54 deaths compared to the all-time high of 56 deaths recorded on Sunday. As per the latest update, deaths have occurred in 11 of the 13 districts in the state.

The overall death toll in Andhra Pradesh has now shot up to 696, state health officials said. East Godavari and Guntur reported the day's high of nine deaths each, while Krishna and Anantapur districts reported seven and six deaths, respectively.

Chittoor, Srikakulam and Visakhapatnam reported five deaths each. Similarly, Kurnool and West Godavari reported three deaths each, while Kadapa and Vizianagaram reported one death each.

Over the past 24 hours, 1,335 persons were discharged from hospitals and COVID treatment centres. There are 28,800 active cases in the state at present while 24,228 persons have been declared as cured.

On the brighter side, not a single positive case was detected on Monday among the returnees from other states to Andhra Pradesh. Till date, 2,461 people have been identified as COVID positive among those who returned from other states.

The active cases tally in this category currently stands at 287, while 2174 persons have been declared as recovered till Monday.

Similarly, there were no new cases detected among overseas returnees. The cumulative tally of COVID patients in this category stands at 434, of which 390 persons have been discharged after getting cured.

Kerala records 720 new COVID-19 cases, one death

Thiruvananthapuram:  Kerala on Tuesday reported 720 fresh cases of COVID-19, taking the number of infected people in the state to 13,994, while 1,62,444 people are under observation in the state.

Of the new cases, 528 were infected from their contacts, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told the media after the daily COVID-19 evaluation meet.

"Sources of at least 34 cases are yet to be identified...82 came from abroad, 54 came from other states...17 health workers,29 defence security corps personnel, four ITBP personnel and five personnel belonging to other paramilitary forces were also affected.

The state also reported one death today," he said.

The chief minister condoled the death of the 72- year-old woman, Victoria, a native of Pulluvila in the district, who succumbed to coronavirus.

"She was also suffering from other age-related ailments," Vijayan said.

He also said 274 people were cured on Tuesday.

Providing the district-wise break-up in the COVID- 19 cases, Vijayan said Thiruvananthapuram reported 151 cases, while Kollam 85.

Ernakulam reported 80 cases, Malappuram 61, Kannur 57, Palakkad 46, Alappuzha 46, Kasaragod 40, Pathanamthitta 40, Kozhikode 39, Kottayam 39, Thrissur 19 andWayand 17.

The chief minister said at least 19,524 samples were tested within the last 24 hours.

"At least 8,277 persons are in isolation wards in various hospitals across the state and a total of 8,056 are under treatment," Vijayan said.

The state government said 353 regions have been categorised as hot spots as of now.

Thiruvananthapuram, the capital district, has 2,201 positive case, the highest in the state, followed by Ernakulam with 909.

Alappuzha district has 617 cases, while Malappuram and Kollam 599 and 555 cases respectively.

25 new COVID-19 cases in Sikkim; tally rises to 330

Gangtok: Sikkim on Tuesday reported 25 new COVID-19 cases, taking the state's tally to 330, a top Health department official said.

Director General (DG)-cum-Secretary, Health, Dr Pema T Bhutia said that 24 persons tested positive in East Sikkim, while South Sikkim reported one case.

All the 25 people have been admitted to the isolation ward of STNM hospital, he said.

Bhutia said of the total 330 COVID-19 cases, 222 are active cases as 108 patients have been cured of the disease.

East Sikkim has accounted for the highest number of COVID-19 cases at 255, followed by 45 in South Sikkim, 29 in West Sikkim and one in North Sikkim.

Sikkim so far has conducted 17,564 tests for COVID-19, the official said.

COVID-19 death toll rises to 1,229 in UP; infection tally stands at 53,288

Lucknow:  The coronavirus death toll rose to 1,229 in Uttar Pradesh after the state reported 37 fatalities, a statement issued by the state government said on Tuesday.

With as many as 2,128 fresh COVID-19 cases, the state’s infection tally reached 53,288.

The state government, however, put the tally of fresh cases at 2,151.

Of the 37 fatalities, as many as eight were reported from Kanpur followed by five from Lucknow, four from Moradabad, three from Unnao, two each from Jhansi and Meerut, and one each from Ghaziabad, Varanasi, Rampur, Bulandshahr, Bijnor, Prayagraj, Sant Kabir Nagar, Deoria, Hardoi, Kaushambi, Kannauj, Baghpat and Hamirpur, the statement said.

Among the fresh COVID-19 cases reported from the state, as many as 230 were from Kanpur followed by 212 from Lucknow, 151 from Jhansi, 95 from Varanasi and 90 from Moradabad.

The total number of active coronavirus cases in the state stands at 20,204.

Till now, as many as 31,855 COVID-19 patients have recovered from the viral disease, the statement added.

Mumbai cop succumbs to COVID-19, force toll 52

Mumbai: A 53-year-old Mumbai police constable died due to COVID-19 in the early hours of Tuesday, taking the toll in the metropolis' force to 52, an official said.

The COVID-19 victim, a resident of Navi Mumbai, was attached to Tilaknagar police station and was admitted in Somaiya Hospital in Chunabhatti on June 22 after falling ill, he informed.

He died due to COVID-19 and pneumonia as per doctors, the official added.

1,349 fresh COVID-19 cases take Delhi''s tally to 1,25,096; death toll climbs to 3,690

New Delhi: Delhi recorded 1,349 fresh COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, taking the tally in the city to over 1.25 lakh, while the death toll mounted to 3,690, authorities said.

After reporting new cases in the range of 1,000 to 2,000 for nine consecutive days, fresh infections in the national capital had dipped to 954 on Monday.

Twenty-seven fatalities were recorded in the last 24 hours, according to a Delhi health department bulletin issued on Tuesday.

The number of active cases stood at 15,288, marginally up from 15,166 on Monday.

The national capital had reported its highest single-day spike of 3,947 on June 23.

The Tuesday bulletin said the death toll from coronavirus infection has risen to 3,690 and the total number of cases mounted to 1,25,096.

AP reports nearly 5,000 fresh COVID-19 cases; 62 deaths

Amaravati: Shooting further up with the addition of nearly 5,000 cases, Andhra Pradesh's COVID-19 tally touched 55,773 while the state saw 62 deaths, the highest in a day so far, on Tuesday.

The latest bulletin said 1,232 patients also got cured and discharged from hospitals as the cumulative recoveries rose to 22,896. The state now has 32,119 active cases.

The COVID-19 toll in the state now stood at 758 with 62 fresh deaths.

Of the total 4,944 positives reported in the last 24 hours ended at 9 AM, as many as 1,581 were found through rapid antigen, the bulletin said.

The state so far completed 13,86,274 tests.

In the last 24 hours, East Godavari district registered ten deaths, Visakhapatnam nine, Chittoor eight and Srikakulam seven.

COVID-19 positive students can write Karnataka CET exams: Karnataka Deputy CM

Bengaluru: In the wake of  COVID 19, the pandemic situation in the Karnataka, the state government has decided to promote all intermediate semester students of degree and post-graduation courses without examinations and also announced that the students who have been tested positive for coronavirus also can take part in the examination.

Speaking to media persons here, Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, C. N. Ashwath Narayan said that the decisions were taken after consulting educationists and university vice-chancellors taking into consideration the well-being, safety and future of students.

" As state will start CET examination for 12th students from 30 to 31 July 2020, all students can take part in examination and quarantine relaxations is being given of 96 hours for international and other state students and parents. Students who have been tested positive for virus can also write the exams," he said.

The exams will be held on the scheduled dates -- July 30 and July 31. At least 1.94 lakh students have enrolled for the entrance exam, Dr Ashwath Narayan said.

As per the Standard Operating Procedure, "no candidate who is COVID-19 positive shall be denied an opportunity to appear in the examinations."

"SOP, preparedness, sanitization, masks, the thermal screening will be taken care of. Emergency services, paramedical staff will be there. Exams will be held with all safety and precautions," the minister told reporters.  

The students appearing for the examinations are required to inform the authorities about their COVID-19 status in advance so that the necessary arrangements can be made. The students are also required to produce a medical certificate. They will be transported between the exam center and hospital by designated 108 ambulances.

Separate rooms will be provided to COVID-19 candidates and a medical team will be stationed at those exam centers. The exam hall will be disinfected as per protocol.

Meanwhile, the capital of Karnataka has recorded over 1,500 fresh cases today. At least 3,648 people have tested positive for the virus in the state.  

The deadly virus has claimed 72 lives, taking the death toll in the state to 1,403.  

The active number of COVID-19 cases in the state have increased to 42,216.

No more lockdown in Karnataka: CM BS Yediyurappa

The Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa on Tuesday confirmed that the lockdown will not be extended in the state.

"There won't be any extension of lockdown in Bengaluru urban & rural districts," Yediyurappa said to media persons.

"There'll be no lockdown from tomorrow, people need to get back to work, the economy is also very important. We have to fight COVID19 while maintaining stable economy. Lockdown is not the solution, now restrictions will be placed only in containment zones," he added.

10 new COVID-19 cases reported in Himachal Pradesh's Sirmaur

Sirmaur: A total of 10 new COVID-19 cases have been reported in Govindgarh area of Sirmaur district in Himachal Pradesh, informed the Deputy Commissioner of Sirmaur, Dr RK Pruthi. "Out of 51 samples that were sent for testing on Monday, 41 tested negative and 10 tested positive for coronavirus," Dr Pruthi said.

He further said, "Out of 10 positive cases, there is a girl (8), a boy (11), five women aged between 29 years to 58 years and three men between the age of 23 years to 34 years." With 10 more COVID-19 cases reported in Himachal Pradesh, the tally of coronavirus cases has reached 1,641 in the state on Tuesday.

Odisha's COVID-19 death toll climbs to 103 with 6 more fatalities

Bhubaneswar: The COVID-19 death toll in Odisha crossed the 100-mark on Tuesday, with six more fatalities taking the total to 103 in the state, a health department official said.

At least 647 more people have tested positive for the disease, pushing the tally to 18,757, he said.

All six fatalities were recorded from as many districts in the state.

Puttige mutt chief tests positive for COVID-19 in Karnataka

Mangaluru:  Swami Sugunendra Teertha, head of the Puttige mutt, one of the Ashta Mutts of Udupi in Karnataka, has tested positive for coronavirus and was admitted to a hospital on Tuesday, hospital sources said.  

The seer had voluntarily gone for a test as he was having a fever and after the result returned positive, he was admitted to the KMC Hospital at Manipal near Udupi. His health condition was stable, hospital sources said.  

The swami's disciples and the devotees of the mutt offered prayers seeking his early recovery. The Ashta Mutts are a group of eight religious institutions established by 13th-century philosopher Madhwacharya in and around the famous Udupi Sri Krishna temple.  

As on Sunday, Udupi district has reported 2,321 COVID-19 cases with 661 being active.

50 fresh cases in Arunachal; count rises to 790

Fifty more people, including nine Army jawans and six police personnel, have tested positive for COVID-19 in Arunachal Pradesh, taking the northeastern state's tally to 790 on Tuesday, a senior health official said.

Thirty-four fresh cases were reported in the Capital Complex region, 10 in the border district of Tawang, five in Lower Subansiri and one in West Siang, he said.

Nine Army jawans are among those infected in Tawan district situated along the India-China border, State Surveillance Officer, Dr L Jampa, said.

Six police personnel from Naharlagun police station are among the 34 new patients in the Capital Complex region, he said.

Four new patients from Lower Subansiri district and the one from West Siang are returnees from other states, Dr Jampa said.

All barring six new patients are asymptomatic and they were shifted to COVID-19 care centres, he said.

Three more persons from Lower Subansiri district recovered from COVID-19 on Monday and were advised 14-day home isolation upon their release from hospitals, the official said.

Of the 790 cases in the state, 502 are active while 285 people have recovered and three patients have died, Dr Jampa said.

The Capital Complex region comprising Itanagar, Naharlagun, Nirjuli and Banderdewa areas has registered the highest number of cases in the state at 306, followed by Changlang (33), Namsai (30), East Siang (24), Papum Pare (22), Lower Subansiri (16), Lower Siang (14) and Leparada and Tawang (10 each), he said.

Covid-19 death toll crosses 100-mark in Odisha

The death toll due to Covid-19 has crossed the 100 figure mark in Odisha, to a total of 103 with the death of six more patients in the last 24 hours, informed the health department on Tuesday.

The deaths were reported from Kendrapara, Gajapati, Khurda, Jagatsinghpur, Rayagada and Cuttack districts.

The state also reported 647 new COVID-19 positive cases in the last 24 hours, taking the tally to 18,757 in the state.

Out of the 647 fresh cases, 431 were reported from quarantine centres and 216 are local contacts, said the department.

The highest positive cases were detected from the hotspot Ganjam (225), followed by Cuttack (84), Khordha (68) and Rayagada (47).

With this, the number of active cases rose to 5,715 while 12,909 people have recovered from the disease so far.

After crossing record 40K, cases dip by 3K in 24 hrs

After an alarming rise over 40,000 cases in a day, India on Tuesday heaved a sigh of relief as the spike in fresh cases showed a dip of around 3,000 with Health Ministry data showing 37,148 new cases being reported in past 24 hours.

India's COVID tally reached 11,55,191 on Tuesday and with 587 fresh deaths, the toll touched 27,497.

As many as 7,24,577 have been cured, which is almost twice the number of active patients at 4,02,529 as the recovery rate stood at 62.7 per cent.

On Monday, the country had crossed the 11-lakh mark, adding over one lakh cases within three days. The highest spike in cases were reported from Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.

Karnataka, the new hotspot state, crossed 67,000 cases, as Maharashtra remained the worst-hit state, with 3,186,95 cases and 12,030 casualties followed by Tamil Nadu with total 1,75,678 cases, and 2,551 deaths.

With 954 new coronavirus cases and 35 deaths in the last 24 hours, the national capital recorded a total tally of 1,23,747 cases and 3,663 deaths.

States with more than 10,000 cases include Karnataka (67,420), Gujarat (49,353), Uttar Pradesh (51,160), Rajasthan (30,390), Madhya Pradesh (23,310), West Bengal (44,769), Haryana (26,858), Andhra Pradesh (53,724), Telangana (46,274), Assam (25,382), Jammu and Kashmir (14,650), Kerala (13,274), Odisha (18,110) and Bihar (27,646).

India continues to be the third worst-hit country after the US and Brazil, and in the last 24 hours, 3,33,395 samples were tested, as the testing lab network continued to expand.

On the global front, the overall number of COVID-19 cases has increased to over 14.6 million, while the deaths were more than 609,000, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Maharashtra COVID cases fall below 9K, MMR tally crosses 2 lakh

Maharashtra's daily Covid-19 cases continued in the upper reaches, scaling the 8,000 mark on Monday, but deaths again dropped below the 200-level even as Mumbai Metropolitan Region crossed the 2 lakh tally, health officials said.

The state notched 8,240 new cases, lower than the peak of 9,518 on July 19, spelling some relief.

The number of deaths in the state dipped from Sunday's 258 to 176 on Monday.

With the fresh fatalities, the state's death toll went up to 12,030, while the total cases touched 318,695 - both highest in the country.

According to Monday's figures, there was one death roughly every 8 minutes and a staggering 343 new cases every hour.

The recovery rate marginally improved from 54.62 per cent a day earlier to 54.92 per cent on Monday, while the current mortality rate stood at 3.77 per cent.

The Health Department said that of the total cases till date, 131,334 are active cases.

On the other hand, 5,460 recovered patients returned home on Monday, taking the total number of discharged patients to 175,029.

For the first time in recent weeks, Pune's daily toll of 42 overshot Mumbai's 41.

Mumbai's toll has risen to 5,755 and the number of corona cases increased by 1,035 to touch 102,423 now.

Apart from Mumbai and Pune, there were 33 deaths in Thane, 21 in Jalgaon, six in Raigad, five in Solapur, four each in Kolhapur and Sangli, three in Aurangabad, two each in Palghar, Satara, Amravati, Buldhana and Nashik, and one each in Dhule, Jalna, Latur, Nanded, Washim, and Wardha. One was from another state.

The MMR (Thane division) continues to see deaths spiral and cases pile up, with the current toll at 8,220 and a staggering 3,789 new cases, pushing up the number of cases to 203,270.

Thane cases have touched 76,749 with 2,069 fatalities to emerge as the second worst-hit district after Mumbai.

Pune district has 57,024 cases, with the death toll at 1,401 on Monday.

The Pune division's death toll has reached 1,872 with the case tally touching 65,286 - but it remains far behind MMR and Thane district.

Nashik division has 919 fatalities and 21,696 cases, followed by Aurangabad division with 439 deaths and 12,303 cases, Akola division with 193 fatalities and 4,833 cases, Kolhapur division with 112 deaths and 4,701 cases, Latur division 121 fatalities and 2,840 cases, and Nagpur division 39 deaths and 3,506 cases.

All the eight divisions recorded fatalities on Monday, while Chandrapur has kept its zero Covid death district status till date, though all divisions and districts in the state have notched fresh cases.

Meanwhile, the number of people sent to home quarantine increased to 765,781, while those in institutional quarantine went down to 45,434 on Monday.

Gujarat sees nearly 1K COVID cases in day, toll rises to 2,167

Gujarat on Monday recorded 998 fresh cases of coronavirus to take its tally to 49,439, while the death toll rose to 2,167 with 20 more deaths.

Of its total tally, the state has seen roughly a third of the cases - 16,796 - within July so far with a daily average of more than 800.

Surat, the new hotspot in the state, is also witnessing a higher count than the preceding day. On Monday, the Diamond City had 284 cases detected, way ahead of Ahmedabad's 193. Vadodara, with 78 cases, was at the third spot.

It was followed by Rajkot with 56, Bhavnagar with 42, Mehsana with 26, Bharuch and Jamnagar with 22 each, Surendranagar and Gandhinagar with 20 each, Junagadh with 19, Patan and Valsad with 17 each, Gir-Somnath, Kutch and Tapi with 16 each, Panchmahals with 15, Amreli, Banaskantha and Kheda with 13 each, Dahod with 12, Mahisagar with 11, Navsari with 10, Botad and Morbi with nine each, Narmada with seven, Anand and Sabarkantha with six each, Aravali with five, Devbhumi Dwarka with three and Chhota Udepur and Porbandar with one case each.

Of Monday's deaths, 11 were reported from Surat, four in Ahmedabad, two each in Vadodara and Navsari and one from Gir-Somnath.

Ahmedabad leads the toll with 1,557 deaths, followed by 273 in Surat, 59 in Vadodara, 37 in Gandhinagar, 24 in Aravalli, 20 in Patan, 17 deaths in Rajkot and Bhavnagar, 16 deaths each in Panchmahals and Banaskantha, 14 deaths each in Mahesana and Kheda, 13 deaths in Anand and 11 have died in Bharuch.

Gujarat's mortality rate has come down a bit to 4.38 per cent, but is still one of the highest in the country.

As many as 12,369 RT-PCR tests were done, the highest number so far in a single day, taking the total figures to 5,48, 989.

Meanwhile, a total of 777 patients were discharged on Monday, taking the number so far to 35,659.

The state has 11,613 active cases, out of which 78 critical patients are still on ventilator and the condition of the rest is stable.

There are presently 4,08,840 people quarantined - 4,06,794 at home and 2,046 in government facilities.

751 more test positive, Jammu and Kashmir' COVID-19 tally crosses 14,000

Jammu and Kashmir on Monday recorded 751 fresh Covid-19 cases, taking the Union Territory's tally to 14,650, while there were 10 more deaths.

A statement issued by the Information and Public Relations Department said that of the new cases, 240 were in the Jammu division and 511 in the Kashmir division.

Ten patients succumbed in different hospitals, taking the toll to 254.

With 8,274 patients having completely recovered, the number of active cases is 6,122, out of which 1,207 are in the Jammu division and 4,915 in the Kashmir division.

3,648 new  cases take Karnataka's  COVID tally over 67K

Karnataka registered 3,648 new COVID positive cases, a majority of them emerging from Bengaluru, increasing the state's tally to 67,420 while 72 more succumbed to the virus, an official said on Monday.

"New cases reported from Sunday 5 p.m. to Monday 5 p.m., 3,648," said a health official.

With 1,452 infections, Bengaluru city accounted for the highest number of cases, sending its tally rising to 33,229 cases, out of which 25,574 are active.

Among the new cases, excluding Bengaluru, Ballari accounted for 234 cases, followed by Bengaluru Rural (208), Dharwad (200), Vijayapura (160) and Mysuru (149) among others.

Meanwhile, 72 patients succumbed to the virus across the state, including 31 in Bengaluru itself, taking the total number of deaths to 1,403.

Most of the deceased suffered from Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) and had fever, cough and breathlessness as symptoms. A few fatalities also suffered from Influenza Like Illness (ILI).

On a positive note, 730 patients have been discharged, raising the total discharges to 23,795.

Of the total 67,420 cases, 42,216 are active and 580 of them are in the ICU.

COVID-19 LIVE: 30 States/UTs have positivity rate lower than India average: Health Ministry

With 4,074 new cases in the 24 hours ending 9 a.m. on Monday, Andhra Pradesh's daily COVID tally saw a dip compared to the record high of 5,041 cases reported on Sunday. The total number of cases in the state now stands at 53,724.

As many as 33,580 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours, including 16,195 rapid antigen tests. Till date, 13,49,122 samples have been tested in Andhra Pradesh.

Twelve of the thirteen districts reported COVID cases in triple figures, with Vizianagaram being the sole exception. East Godavari reported the highest tally of 1,068 positive cases, followed by Guntur (596), Kurnool (559) and West Godavari (354).

Other districts that reported high numbers over the previous 24 hours include Anantapur (342), Srikakulam (261), Prakasam (221), Kadapa (152), Krishna (129), Chittoor (116), Visakhapatnam (102) and Nellore (100).

Vizianagaram with 52 cases was the only district to report double-digit COVID cases on Monday.

Monday's figures also featured the second-highest death toll on a single day. The state reported 54 deaths compared to the all-time high of 56 deaths recorded on Sunday. As per the latest update, deaths have occurred in 11 of the 13 districts in the state.

The overall death toll in Andhra Pradesh has now shot up to 696, state health officials said. East Godavari and Guntur reported the day's high of nine deaths each, while Krishna and Anantapur districts reported seven and six deaths, respectively.

Chittoor, Srikakulam and Visakhapatnam reported five deaths each. Similarly, Kurnool and West Godavari reported three deaths each, while Kadapa and Vizianagaram reported one death each.

Over the past 24 hours, 1,335 persons were discharged from hospitals and COVID treatment centres. There are 28,800 active cases in the state at present while 24,228 persons have been declared as cured.

On the brighter side, not a single positive case was detected on Monday among the returnees from other states to Andhra Pradesh. Till date, 2,461 people have been identified as COVID positive among those who returned from other states.

The active cases tally in this category currently stands at 287, while 2174 persons have been declared as recovered till Monday.

Similarly, there were no new cases detected among overseas returnees. The cumulative tally of COVID patients in this category stands at 434, of which 390 persons have been discharged after getting cured.
