Chennai (Tamil Nadu): In an attempt to minimize hand contact and to contain the spread of the deadly virus, Chennai Metro Rail Network has started foot-operated elevators on a trial basis at Chennai Metro Railway Station (CMRS) Head Office.

With this, Chennai becomes the first city in India to put forward the mechanism of hand-free, foot-operated lifts which is presently installed in the Administrative Building CMRS at Koyembedu. In a foot-operated elevator pedal system, people can use the lift without touching the buttons.

The authorities said that all the metro stations will soon have this design.

"We chalked out this design to reduce the rate of transmission. If a person touches the lift button, there are high chances that he or she may get infected. So, we came up with this idea of foot-operated lifts," they added.

It is to be noted that the team of CMRS was doing extensive research from a long time to implement contactless measures for the commuters. The total number of positive cases in Tamil Nadu stands at 20,246 with death toll at 154. At least 11,313 people have been cured and discharged till date.
