New Delhi: Amid the growing number of coronavirus cases and to contain the spread of the virus in the jail, Tihar jail authorities have decided to release three thousand prisoners in next few days.
Out of these, 1500 prisoners will be convicts, while 1500 prisoners will be those who are on trial. They will be released on bail and parole.
According to the information, about 17000 prisoners are currently lodged in Tihar Jail.
Tihar Jail has a capacity of about 10,000 prisoners. In such a situation, if any one is infected with the virus, it can spread very fast which can be disastrous.
Recently, the Supreme Court had also instructed the Tihar administration to consider releasing the prisoners in jail after conducting a review. The government and the Tihar administration are working on this.
Sources in Tihar Jail said that they are preparing a list of prisoners who can be released.
In view of the behavior of the sentenced prisoners, they will be released on parole. They will be given parole for some time after which they will have to return to jail.
At the same time, 1500 prisoners who are facing trial will be left with good behavior in the jail and will be released on interim bail.
