Violence-hit northeast Delhi gears up for Holi

Days after violence erupted in northeast Delhi, the area was seen limping back to normalcy, gearing up for the festival of colours. While some set up holy pyres for 'Holika Dahan', others were seen taking to the markets to buy colours to celebrate the festival. Heavy security presence was also witnessed in the area. The ensuing tension post the violence has cast a spell of doubt over the festival.

Top doctor lists out precautions to take while playing Holi

With Holi celebrations facing the threat of coronavirus, Dr Mohsin Wali, who has worked an an honorary physician to three former Presidents, said that there was no reason to not play Holi due to the virus outbreak. He however, advised people to take necessary precautions during the festival - like maintaining a safe distance from people, avoiding large gatherings and not playing with water. He said that people could dry their Holi colours in the Sun to ensure proper safety.

On the occasion of 'Choti Holi', world-renowned artist Sudarsan Pattnaik created a sand art in Odisha's Puri. Through the beautiful sand sculpture, Pattnaik not only extended Holi greetings, but also urged people to take precautions in view of the coronavirus outbreak. "Happy Holi. Take care from Coronavirus," reads the message on his sand art.

New Delhi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday said that he will not celebrate Holi in view of the coronavirus outbreak in the country.

"In view of coronavirus scare and keeping the experts' opinion in mind, I will not participate in the Holi celebrations this year. Please maintain cleanliness and take necessary precautions," Rajnath tweeted.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced that he will not be participating in any 'Holi Milan' programmes this year in view of the coronavirus outbreak.

"Experts across the world have advised to reduce mass gatherings to avoid the spread of COVID-19 novel coronavirus. Hence, this year I have decided not to participate in any Holi Milan programme," the Prime Minister tweeted.

Following Prime Minister Modi's example, Shah and BJP president J P Nadda also took to Twitter to announce their decision to not celebrate Holi or hold any Holi gatherings in view of the coronavirus outbreak.

So far, at least 40 positive cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India.

Global deaths due to coronavirus outbreak have risen above 3,000. The deadly virus, that originated in China late last year, continues to spread around the world.
