New Delhi: The Congress party has once again slammed the Modi government after the name of Congress leader Salman Kurshid cropped up in the charge sheet in the Delhi riots case. Calling it as a matter of 'shame', the opposition has alleged that is a conspiracy of Modi government to falsely 'implicate' and 'harass' the political leaders.

Salman Khurshid's name has been mentioned in the disclosure statements of accused Khalid Saifi and Ishrat Jahan, who stated that he had come to the protest site and gave 'provocative speeches'.

When contacted, Khurshid told ETV Bharat, "Whatever has been said by BJP leaders has not been taken seriously by Delhi Police. But, they have put out my name in the charge sheet to portray me in a bad light. This is just a collection of trash which Delhi Police has collected in this charge sheet."

However, other Congress leaders have also expressed anguish over the matter. Senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel tweeted, "It is shameful that the BJP government is falsely harassing senior political leaders like Salman Khurshid, Sitaram Yechuri and others. These leaders have an impeccable record of fostering communal harmony, the Delhi Police's charges are not only wrong but also laughable."

Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala, who always voices his opinion, wrote on Twitter, "The FIR against Salman Kurshid, Dr. Uditraj and others reflect the mortal fear & cowardice of Modi Govt. These are men & women of proven track record & of stellar service to the Nation. Not surprising that a narcissist Govt gets insecure of voices of dissent.

Lashing out at Modi govt for toppling democracy, Surjewala said, "Whether in the Parliament or the restless streets of India, Modi Govt subjugates, suppresses & suffocates dialogue and discussion. PM Modi detests such democratic principles. Let it be remembered - we’ll neither cow down nor bow down before authoritarianism.

Congress General Secretary Incharge, Mukul Wasnik also tweeted, "Salman Khurshid named in the latest charge sheet filed by Delhi Police in riots case. Nation watched people giving slogans "Goli maro". Some made more provocative speeches. They have not been named. People in power should remember that ultimately 'Truth shall prevail'."

Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh slammed the Delhi Police, saying, "A former Foreign Minister and Law Minister, Salman Khurshid is amongst the nicest, gentlest, learned, nationalistic, secular Indians I have known, and he figures in a charge sheet! It is a SHAME on the Delhi Police and it's true and two masters."

Calling it a 'sheer mockery of justice', Youth Congress alleged that hate speeches by BJP leaders like Kapil Mishra and Anurag Thakur led to communal riots in Delhi but they are still not being named in charge sheet, while names of those who defended human rights are mentioned. "Welcome to Modi's New India," it stated.Recently, a delegation of Opposition leaders submitted a memorandum to President of India, raising serious concerns over the investigation by Delhi Police in the matter of Delhi riots occurred earlier this year.

The memorandum submitted by Congress leader Ahmed Patel, CPI's D Raja, CPI(M)'s Sitaram Yechury, DMK's Kanimozi and RJD's Manoj Jha questioned the role played by Delhi Police itself during the violence and also alleged that the Police is "harassing" and attempting to "falsely implicate" activists who took part in anti-CAA/NRC protests, by terming it a "deep conspiracy" of those who are in power.
