Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot took out a flag march in Jaipur

Congress workers led by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot took out a flag march in Jaipur on Saturday to protest against the "anti-people" policies of the BJP-led Central government.

The flag march started from Shaheed Smarak and reached the party's state headquarters.

The party had decided to take out a flag march raising 'Save India, Save Constitution' slogans against the policies of the Centre on its 135th foundation day. 

At the headquarters, party state president Pilot hoisted the Congress flag and everyone took oath of the Preamble of the Constitution.

Addressing the event, Pilot called upon party workers to take the issue of 'Save India' among the people. He said, "We have to reach people with the Save India message. In the times to come, we have to show that the Constitution is supreme."

Pilot said the Congress government completed one year in the state and has fulfilled the promises it had made while also exhorting that the party has to work taking cognisance of public sentiment.

Chief Minister Gehlot said the Congress party has a long history of 134 years and sacrifice has been a tradition of the party.

He said, "Fascist people have come to power wearing a mask of democracy. But, the people have recognised them, which is why BJP is losing power in states one after the other."

The senior leader said the entire party is united under the leadership of the party's interim president Sonia Gandhi against the "wrong policies" of Prime Minister Narendra Modi led BJP government at the Centre.

The event saw participation of several MLAs, ministers and a large number of party workers.

On its 134th foundation day, the Congress party on Saturday took out a protest rally against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) to convey the message of 'Save Constitution-Save India' to the people.  

The leaders were seen carrying flags of the party and placards that read 'Save Constitution-Save India'. They also raised slogans in support of party leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and against the CAA and NRC.

"We want to bring all things back that Congress had done during its tenure. It is our responsibility to save the constitution. The leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party are destroying the Constitution. The Act is not only against the Muslim community but also the poor people of the country," said a Congress leader, who was a part of the demonstration. 

The protest rally concluded near the Girgaon beach in the city.

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of creating confusion in the country over the implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC). 

Speaking to a media agency, Chowdhury said, "While Amit Shah says something in Parliament, Narendra Modi says something else outside it over NRC implementation. The Home Minister and Prime Minister are creating confusion over NRC." 

Chowdhury advised both the BJP leaders to make a consensus to avoid confusion on the issue. "They should decide what they want to speak," the Congress leader said. 

Addressing a rally, earlier this week, Modi accused Congress and its allies of spreading lies among the public on the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC). 

"A lot of lies are being spread about NRC. We did not introduce it, nor did we bring it to the Parliament or announce it," Modi said. 

Modi's comment was in contravention to that of the Home Minister who had announced in Parliament to introduce nationwide NRC. 

Reacting to the Prime Minister's comment, Chowdhury said, "We opposed it inside and outside Parliament as well as in the court."

After the attending a Congress rally, Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot spoke to reporters at the Jaipur airport saying, "We will not have NRC in Rajasthan. The Centre has to scrap this Bill."

He said that the Centre is in a fix now and it getting for them to rise over it.

Virtually equating the ruling BJP government with the British, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday said that at present the country fighting an ideology which it had fought against during the freedom struggle.

"Today in the country, there are such powers in the government with whom we had a historical clash. We are at present fighting an ideology against which we had fought during the freedom struggle," she said here at the UP Congress headquarters.

Priyanka Gandhi was addressing party leaders during a programme held to mark the 135th Foundation Day of the Congress.

"Today the country is in trouble. If we do not raise our voice, we will be proved to be cowards," she added.

The Delhi Congress led by its president Subhash Chopra on Saturday took out a peace march from the party office on DDU Marg to mark the 135th foundation day of the party.

The Congress leaders and workers first marched to Ambedkar Stadium where they garlanded a portrait of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar and then moved forward to the Rajghat to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi's memorial.

Chopra said "the Congress was formed during freedom struggle and is continuing to fight against forces in the country that are trying to disturb peace by dividing the people".

Intensifying its protest against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act, the Congress in Kerala took out a "Maha Rally" to the Raj Bhavan here on Saturday, in which various leaders, including former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram participated.

The rally, which began from Martyr's column, was led by KPCC President, Mullapally Ramachandran, Leader of Opposition in the state assembly Ramesh Chennithala, besides Chidambaram.

Hundreds of party workers, including MPs and MLAs are among those who participated.

The rally is being held as part of the "Save The Constitution-Save India" campaign of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in Kerala here.

The Congress on its 135th foundation day on Saturday said India has always come first for it through the ages and sacrifice for the nation stands above all else for the party. 

On the occasion, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi hoisted the party's flag at its headquarters here at 24, Akbar Road.

"Sacrifice for the nation stands above all else for the Congress party. From the time of our foundation, through the Indian independence movement and for all the days to come, India comes first," the party said on its official Twitter handle.

"135 years of Unity, 135 years of justice, 135 years of equality, 135 years of ahimsa, 135 years of freedom. Today we celebrate 135 years of Indian National Congress," it said.

Former prime minister Manmohan Singh, senior Congress leaders A K Antony, Motilal Vohra and Anand Sharma among others attended the event.

Sonia Gandhi and Singh also distributed sweets among children present at the ceremony.

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi, in a tweet, acknowledged the selfless contribution of millions of Congress workers through the ages.

 Amid raging protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), the Congress will take out marches across the country to take its "Save Constitution-Save India" message to the people.

Rahul Gandhi will address a rally in Assam's Guwahati, where he will take on the Narendra Modi government over the contentious new citizenship law, among other issues.

The Maharashtra unit of the Congress on Saturday took out a flag march here with the message of 'Save Bharat-Save Constitution' on the occasion of the party's foundation day.

The march was taken out between the August Kranti Maidan and the statue of Lokmanya Tilak near Girgaum Chowpatty.

Congress general secretary in-charge of Maharashtra, Mallikarjun Kharge, and other state unit leaders participated in the march, which began after the flag-hoisting ceremony at
Tejpal Hall near August Kranti Maidan.

It was in this hall, the foundation of the Congress party was laid in 1885.

Before the march began, the party leaders and workers also paid homage at the martyrs' memorial at August Kranti Maidan.

LIVE: Congress holds massive protest rally against CAA, NRC

New Delhi: Amid raging anti-CAA protests, the Congress will take out marches across the country on its 134th foundation day on Saturday to take its "Save Constitution-Save India" message to the people.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi will unfurl the party's flag at the AICC headquarters here on Saturday morning to mark the occasion, while former party chief Rahul Gandhi will address a rally in Assam's Guwahati, where he will take on the Narendra Modi government over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), among other issues.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will address party workers at Lucknow at a meeting of the Uttar Pradesh Pradesh Congress Committee (UPPCC).

"In addition to the customary flag hoisting in state capitals, presidents of Pradesh Congress Committees will undertake flag marches carrying the message of 'Save Constitution-Save India'," Congress general secretary, organization, K C Venugopal, said in a statement.

They will also read the preamble of the Constitution in their respective languages at public meetings organised for this purpose, he said.

In the last few days there has been widespread protests in colleges, universities and prominent institutions across the country against the government's decision to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the CAA, Venugopal said.

"Faced by this massive backlash, the PM (Narendra Modi) and Home Minister (Amit Shah) have indulged in characteristic double speak, and are now attempting to covertly undertake the exercise through NPR (the National Population Register)," he said in the statement.

"The protestors were attacked by police indiscriminately. There were cases of deaths due to police firing at many places. The government has put itself in a bind on these issues with the PM, HM and RM (Raksha Mantri) making contradictory statements on different occasions.

"The CAA proposes to flout the guarantees of Article 14, in contravention of the Constitution," Venugopal said.

Amidst massive public outrage, the government decided to take a step further and announced 'updation of NPR' exercise on December 24, he said.

This has again raised heckles and suspicion because of the RSS-BJP's long hidden agenda to implement the NRC following completion of the NPR exercise, the Congress leader said.

The Congress will rise to every occasion when there is a challenge to the Constitution and any effort to derail the country from its path of progress amidst historical unemployment and pall of economic gloom, Venugopal said.

LIVE: Congress holds massive protest rally against CAA, NRC

New Delhi: Amid raging anti-CAA protests, the Congress will take out marches across the country on its 134th foundation day on Saturday to take its "Save Constitution-Save India" message to the people.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi will unfurl the party's flag at the AICC headquarters here on Saturday morning to mark the occasion, while former party chief Rahul Gandhi will address a rally in Assam's Guwahati, where he will take on the Narendra Modi government over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), among other issues.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will address party workers at Lucknow at a meeting of the Uttar Pradesh Pradesh Congress Committee (UPPCC).

"In addition to the customary flag hoisting in state capitals, presidents of Pradesh Congress Committees will undertake flag marches carrying the message of 'Save Constitution-Save India'," Congress general secretary, organization, K C Venugopal, said in a statement.

They will also read the preamble of the Constitution in their respective languages at public meetings organised for this purpose, he said.

In the last few days there has been widespread protests in colleges, universities and prominent institutions across the country against the government's decision to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the CAA, Venugopal said.

"Faced by this massive backlash, the PM (Narendra Modi) and Home Minister (Amit Shah) have indulged in characteristic double speak, and are now attempting to covertly undertake the exercise through NPR (the National Population Register)," he said in the statement.

"The protestors were attacked by police indiscriminately. There were cases of deaths due to police firing at many places. The government has put itself in a bind on these issues with the PM, HM and RM (Raksha Mantri) making contradictory statements on different occasions.

"The CAA proposes to flout the guarantees of Article 14, in contravention of the Constitution," Venugopal said.

Amidst massive public outrage, the government decided to take a step further and announced 'updation of NPR' exercise on December 24, he said.

This has again raised heckles and suspicion because of the RSS-BJP's long hidden agenda to implement the NRC following completion of the NPR exercise, the Congress leader said.

The Congress will rise to every occasion when there is a challenge to the Constitution and any effort to derail the country from its path of progress amidst historical unemployment and pall of economic gloom, Venugopal said.
