New Delhi: A Congress delegation approached Election Commission of India, on Tuesday, to file a complaint against BJP leaders Anurag Thakur and Parvesh Verma for their provocative remarks during election rallies, calling it as a violation of model code of conduct.

Recently, BJP leader Anurag Thakur was caught on camera, prompting chants 'Goli Maaro....' against the Shaheen Bagh protestors which triggered a row. While on the other hand, BJP MP Parvesh Verma claimed that the roads of Shaheen Bagh will be cleared within an hour if BJP government comes to power in Delhi.

Congress delegation led by Ajay Maken and Delhi Pradesh Congress Chief Subhash Chopra filed a complaint over the violation of MCC, demanding either to ban them for campaigning in the upcoming assembly elections or to cancel the candidature of BJP from that area.

While speaking to media, Ajay Maken said, "The kind of objectionable language that has been used by BJP star campaigners Anurag Thakur, Parvesh Verma or even by Amit Shah during their election meetings, it seems that BJP wants to communalise or polarize the atmosphere of Delhi. Election Commission has given us an assurance that they have called a meeting of all the district officers and police commissioners on 31st of January to discuss the matter."

Election Commission has also asked the CEO to submit a report on this matter and even accepted that the statements given by BJP leaders are objectionable. Maken further added, "EC has the power to cancel canvassing of star campaigners and also to ban them for campaigning. It can also cancel the candidature of BJP candidate. We hope that the EC would take serious cognizance against the BJP leaders without making a concession in it."

DPCC Chief Subhash Chopra said that BJP is continuously giving ads in newspapers which is a violation of model code of conduct. "They are publishing fake ads claiming lies regarding the development that has been done in the past 15 years. They should understand that these fake claims cannot change reality. Instead of that, EC would take strict action against them as they are trying to communalise the atmosphere of Delhi and spreading violence across the city against Anti-CAA protestors."
