Citizenship cannot be determined by or linked to religion, bill unconstitutional: CPI(M)

Earlier in the day, the Union cabinet cleared the bill that seeks to grant citizenship to non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, if they have faced religious persecution there, sources said.

"It is simple. Citizenship cannot be determined by or linked to religion. This is what makes the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) unacceptable and unconstitutional. The CAB is aimed at destroying the basis of India," said the Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Sitaram Yechury.

"India's citizens are its citizens, irrespective of their caste, creed, place of residence, gender or colour of skin," he said.

Demanding that the bill be withdrawn, he said it was not just a change in the existing statute.

"The Citizenship Amendment Bill has reportedly been cleared by the Cabinet. But it must be withdrawn as it isn't a mere change in the statute. If passed, it will fundamentally alter the character of the Indian Republic," the Left leader said in another tweet.

Intro:The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has slammed the Modi government on the idea of Citizenship amendment bill which got the cabinet nod on Wednesday.
Alleging Modi government of working with an agenda of RSS to convert a secular republic into a Hindutva Rashtra with a fascist ideology, CPIM general secretary Sitaram Yechuri said that the CAB is ultra violation of the constitution.
"The first time it was brought in 2016 in the Rajya Sabha, we did not allow it to be passed. Our stand on this bill was that it is unconstitutional and it should be withdrawn, our position remains the same" said Yechuri.
"The citizenship issue can not be related to religious affiliation of an individual and that is exactly this bill wants to do" he added.

On NRC for whole country

NRC was a specific part of Assam accord and it was limited to Assam only. The deadline fixed for NRC in a meeting between then prime minister Indira Gandhi and Shekh Muzibur Rahman in 1971 was year 1996. Implementing the NRC in whole country is a useless idea but they have a motive behind this also. The want to further expend their idea of communal polarization.

Body:The senior CPIM leader alleged that with a package of NRC and CAB, the Modi government only wants to exclude Muslims from this exercise.
