Centre's Citizenship Bill brings anti-BJP forces together

New Delhi: Anti-BJP forces in Assam and other parts of North East India have joined hands to give an upthrust to their anti-citizenship amendment bill passed recently by Narendra Modi government in Lok Sabha but yet to get through in Rajya Sabha. Led by former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi's son Akhil Gogoi anti-citizenship bill protestors have now appealed non-BJP political outfits to raise the issue inside the parliament.

Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader, Akhil Gogoi, in his attempt to champion the anti-citizenship bill movement called upon the leaders of opposition parties including SP, AAP, RJD, CPI, and Congress urging them to oppose the Citizenship Amendment bill in the Rajya Sabha where it's yet to be passed.

"All the leaders have told us that Citizenship Amendment bill is unlikely to be tabled in the Rajya Sabha," said Akhil Gogoi while addressing a press conference after his series of meeting in Delhi.

"Even if the bill is introduced, all the parties have assured us that they will oppose the bill," said Gogoi adding that DMK has also extended their support to them.

Leaders of all the 70 organizations opposing the Citizenship Amendment Bill also called on SP leader Ram Gopal Yadav on Saturday morning for his support.

Akhil Gogoi stressed that KMSS along with other allies is going to bar the entry of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Sankardeva Shangha at Morigaon, Assam which is scheduled on 8-9 February to campaign for the Lok Sabha elections, as a part of the protest against Citizenship Amendment Bill.

"We have requested Srimanta Sankaradeva Sangha not to invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi for its upcoming annual session," he told.

"We will disrupt meetings and public rallies conducted by BJP leaders in Assam and hoist black flags on stage," said Gogoi.

"The Centre might try to bring an ordinance regarding the bill but we are going to oppose it and the protests will go on until the bill is pulled down," said KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi.

"We have also demanded the government to give ST status to six communities in Assam," he urged.

The Citizenship Amendment bill seeks to amend the Citizenship Act 1955 to grant Indian nationality to people from minority communities — Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians — from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan after six years of residence in India instead of 12 even if they do not possess any proper documentation.

On February four, leaders of all 70 organizations opposing the contentious bill will meet AICC president Rahul Gandhi.
