Centre emphasises importance of Ayush in fighting Covid-19

Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan launched 'Ayush Sanjivani' app and Ayush based studies related to Covid-19 situation. Reiterating the importance of Ayush in the fight against COVID-19, the health minister said that the Ayush studies will establish the importance of Ayush-pathies with the help of rigour of CSIR, ICMR and DCGI.

New Delhi: The Union Health Ministry on Thursday reiterated that Ayush can play a big role in India's fight against Covid-19.

Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan launched 'Ayush Sanjivani' app and Ayush based studies related to Covid-19 situation.

"The app will help to generate data on acceptance and usage of Ayush advocacies and measures among the population and its impact on the prevention of Covid-19...This situation has provided a platform of joint hands between MoHFW and Ayush," said Dr Vardhan.

The Ayush studies that were launched today include a collaborative clinical research study on Ayurveda interventions as prophylaxis and as an add on to standard care to Covid-19.

The studies will establish the importance of Ayush-pathies with the help of rigour of CSIR, ICMR and DCGI, said Dr Vardhan.

Meanwhile, Ayush Secretary Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha said that government will conduct randomised controlled clinical trial to assess the efficacy of ayurvedic drugs ashwagandha as preventive interventions among healthcare professionals, high-risk Covid-19 population in comparison to Hydroxychloroquine.

The clinical trial will also emphasise on the effectiveness of Ayurvedic formulations as an adjunct to the treatment of mild to moderate Covid19 patients.

In a related development, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Thursday said that it will not go ahead with the Jal Shakti Ministry's proposal to undertake clinical studies with Ganga Water for treatment of Covid-19 patients.

Emphasising on the need for more scientific data, the ICMR said that the evidence and data available at the moment does not support to start clinical studies of Ganga Water for treatment of Covid-19.

The development took place as Jal Shakti Ministry approaches ICMR after it received several proposals to undertake clinical studies for the treatment of Covid-19 patients with the water.
