Mau: Nineteen people have been arrested in connection with Monday night's violence, which erupted over police action in Delhi's Jamia Millia Islamia, officials said. Protesters on Monday had vandalised a police station and torched vehicles as a demonstration against the amended Citizenship Act and police action at Jamia Millia Islamia turned violent here, prompting police to fire in the air.

Eastern Railway cancels 19 trains

Eastern Railway on Tuesday cancelled as many as 19 trains due to the ongoing unrest across the country over newly-enacted Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019.

"In connection with law and order problem in the jurisdiction of Northeast Frontier Railway and in New Farakka-Azimganj and Krishnanagar-Lalgola Sections of Eastern Railway, 19 trains have been cancelled for today," Public Relations Officer of Eastern Railway said in a release.

Five college students were arrested in Gujarat's Vadodara district on Tuesday for allegedly making objectionable graffiti, which included the word 'Modi', to protest the new Citizenship Act, police said.

They made the 'swastika' sign with charcoal in place of 'o' in the word 'Modi', a police official said.

Thiruvananthapuram: The dawn-to-dusk statewide shutdown called by around 33 organisations to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 in Kerala was by and large peaceful even as the police arrested 278 people while taking another 184 into preventive custody from various parts of the state.

However, at a few places in the state protesters turned violent stoning public transport buses and forcing shops to down their shutters. Attendance at government and private offices was also reported to be low.

State Police chief Loknath Behra had said on Monday that the police will take strong action against law breakers and it happened with 278 arrests and 184 people being taken into preventive custody.

While shutdowns in Kerala have always been a regular feature, this is the first time that the police has acted tough.

Srinagar: There were protests by students at the Islamia college against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The police used force to disperse the protesters, following a clash that erupted between them.

"The students started pelting stones on the police to which they resorted to action and dispersed them", said Haseeb Mughal, SSP Srinagar.

However, a group of scribes were allegedly roughed up by the police soon after the violence broke out.

"We were just trying to take videos of some of the boys who we thought were detained by the police. That's when the police thrashed us and confiscated my phone", said Aazan Javed, a correspondent of the Print based in Srinagar.

"My phone is still with the police and I was performing my duty when the incident took place," he added.

26 arrested people released, situation improves in AMU

As many as 26 people, including eight students, arrested in connection with violence at Aligarh Muslim University and surrounding areas have been released as the situation in the University showed marked signs of improvement on Tuesday, officials said.

The University has been witnessing violent protests over the amended Citizenship Act.

The process of evacuation of hostels at the AMU continued overnight, and according to latest figures provided by the AMU administration, about 9,500 out of 11,500 inmates have left for home, university officials said.

Reacting to it, Thackeray said, "There is a deliberate attempt to create an atmosphere of unrest in society. The way police opened fire on students by forcefully entering the compound, it appeared like the Jalianwala Bagh massacre."

The district administration in Prayagraj on Tuesday said that Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), prohibiting the gathering of five or more persons, was imposed in the region and warned against holding rallies, protests, and demonstrations without prior permission.

 "Section 144 is in place in Prayagraj district and holding any rally, protests, demonstration and public meeting without permission is strictly prohibited," the administration said.

Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) chief Mayawati demanded the rollback of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) 2019 and added that its implementation would leave a negative impact on society in the near future.

"I demand the central government to take back this unconstitutional law, otherwise it may lead to negative consequences in the future. They should not create an Emergency-like situation, " said BSP supremo Mayawati.

"BSP's parliamentary party has also sought time to meet the President (Ram Nath Kovind). Our party will also raise our voice in the Uttar Pradesh assembly against CAA 2019, and crimes against women," former Uttar Pradesh chief minister added.

Director General of Assam Police, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta on Tuesday said that a total of 136 cases have been registered and 190 people were arrested for violence and hooliganism during the protests held against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) across the state.

"136 cases have been registered so far and 190 protesters have been arrested, while 3,000 protesters have been detained. These were not normal democratic protesters but people who indulged in violence, some conspirators have also been arrested, including some major leaders from various organisation, " Mahanta told reporters.

Incidents of stone pelting on state-run KSRTC buses have been reported from various parts of Kerala as the dawn-to-dusk hartal called against the Citizenship Amendment Act and police action on students of Jamia university in Delhi, began on Tuesday.

A group of 30 Islamic and political outfits have called the hartal from which major political parties, including the ruling CPI(M) and the opposition Congress and IUML are keeping away.

KSRTC, private buses, four wheelers and autorickshaws were seen plying in the state capital, while in north Kerala, especially Kannur and Kozhikode, roads wore a deserted look in the early hours of the stir.

Curfew relaxed in Shillong from 6 am to 7 pm
 

Curfew was relaxed for 13 hours in Shillong on Tuesday even as the ban on mobile internet services will remain in force, officials said.

The curfew was relaxed from 6 am from areas under Lumdiengjri police station and Sadar police station limits, a statement from the East Khasi Hills district administration said.

Banks, main markets were open and vehicles were plying on the streets. Schools have announced their annual results following which winter vacations have begun in most of the educational institutions.

Mobile internet remained shut for another 48 hours beginning from 5 pm on Monday even as mobile messaging services were relaxed to 5 messages per number that includes OTP services, a senior Home department official said.

The internet services were temporarily suspended in some districts of West Bengal as a "precautionary measure".

Meanwhile, the curfew imposed in Dibrugarh district of Assam in the wake of major protests across the state over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, was on Tuesday relaxed from 6 am to 8 pm by the district administration.

So far, police have registered 136 cases and have arrested 190 persons in connection with recent incidents happening in Guwahati and in the entire state, he had added.

Protests had broken out in several parts of Assam following the passage of Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019, in Parliament on Wednesday, and it becoming an Act thereupon after the Presidential assent on Thursday.

As many as 26 Army columns have been deployed in Assam to assist the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) to handle the situation.

Meanwhile, internet services continue to remain suspended in several districts of the state.

Curfew relaxed in Shillong from 6 am to 7 pm
 

Curfew was relaxed for 13 hours in Shillong on Tuesday even as the ban on mobile internet services will remain in force, officials said.

The curfew was relaxed from 6 am from areas under Lumdiengjri police station and Sadar police station limits, a statement from the East Khasi Hills district administration said.

Banks, main markets were open and vehicles were plying on the streets. Schools have announced their annual results following which winter vacations have begun in most of the educational institutions.

Mobile internet remained shut for another 48 hours beginning from 5 pm on Monday even as mobile messaging services were relaxed to 5 messages per number that includes OTP services, a senior Home department official said.

Curfew to be lifted completely; internet to be restored from today: Assam Min Himanta 

Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday tweeted that the Assam government has decided to lift completely lift the curfew imposed on Assam from Tuesday (December 17), including night curfew.

New Delhi: With unrest over the amendment made to the Citizenship Act spreading throughout the country, internet services in Howrah district of West Bengal have been suspended further till 5 pm on Tuesday.

The internet services were temporarily suspended in some districts of West Bengal as a "precautionary measure".

Meanwhile, the curfew imposed in Dibrugarh district of Assam in the wake of major protests across the state over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, was on Tuesday relaxed from 6 am to 8 pm by the district administration.

So far, police have registered 136 cases and have arrested 190 persons in connection with recent incidents happening in Guwahati and in the entire state, he had added.

Protests had broken out in several parts of Assam following the passage of Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019, in Parliament on Wednesday, and it becoming an Act thereupon after the Presidential assent on Thursday.

As many as 26 Army columns have been deployed in Assam to assist the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) to handle the situation.

Meanwhile, internet services continue to remain suspended in several districts of the state.
