Lucknow: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP Malook Nagar on Friday suggested that Uttar Pradesh should be divided into smaller states for better governance and overall development of the state.

Malook Nagar said, "Law and order is deteriorating in the state and grievances of the farmers over the controversial farm bills have also remained unsolved. In the backdrop of such administrative issues, the state should be divided into smaller segments."

Various social and farmer organisations are singing the same tune, demanding division of the BJP-led state.

The Mayawati-led BSP government in 2011 had passed a proposal in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly to divide the state into four parts -- Bundelkhand, Purvanchal, Awadh Pradesh and Paschim Pradesh.

The proposal was later sent to the then Congress-led UPA government at the Centre.

Talking to ETV Bharat, BSP MP said, "The issue was raised after country's independence in 1954 by Dr B.R. Ambedhkar that the state must be divided into three segments. After this, it was our party that raked up this issue."

Highlighting on problems faced by the people in travelling, the leader went to add, "People have to travel to Allahabad and Lucknow to go to High Court. I have raised this issue in the Parliament's Monsoon session and now the Central government must take a final call. We are ready for a protest and our party workers are preparing for vast rallies if such need arises. We are sure that people will support us on this issue."

Asked about whether the opposition parties will support their cause, Nagar asserted that every political leader irrespective of any political party have made false promises to the audience that a high court will be built in the smaller towns in the state. But after coming in power, they disappear. If the Central govt wants to see development in UP, they will understand the issue as it needs the support of farmers and various small organisations.
