New Delhi: The Bhartiya Kisan Union (Lakhowal) on Friday withdrew its petition filed in the Supreme Court against the farm laws enacted by the Union Government.

Lakhowal faction had moved SC without consulting the other unions, and therefore, it was decided unanimously that the petition should be withdrawn from the top court.

Ajmer Singh Lakhowal, president, BKU (Lakhowal) confirmed that the petition is withdrawn from the apex court in the larger interest of the farming community.

The 400 page petition was filed against three farm acts on Monday this week.

Dismissing the rallies by political parties, Lakhowal said their ‘drama’ was not aimed at the welfare of the farmers, but at getting the political mileage and promoting their own vested interests.

Citing the close and old ties of the outfit’s president with the Akalis, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh said the BKU (Lakhowal) group’s U-turn on its petition against the farm laws in the Supreme Court was the result of pressure from the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), which seemed to be once again cozying up to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Lakhowal’s relations with the Akalis were well-known and he had remained the Chairman of the Mandi Board for a decade under the Badal regime.

The Chief Minister said the sudden decision of the Lakhowal’s organisation to back off from challenging the draconian farm laws in the apex court indicated that he was acting at the behest of SAD. He warned other Kisan Unions to be cautious, and not to play into the hands of the Akalis, who had been instrumental in the enactment of the farm laws in the first place in support of their allies, the BJP.

Farmers across the state are protesting against farm acts and Shiromani Akali Dal has pulled out of NDA as protest against these acts.
