"The present government at the Centre is a tukde tukde government and they are dividing the people of the country," he said.

Raja was referring to the comments made by top BJP leaders including Home Minister Amit Shah tagging the opposition as 'tukde tukde gang.'

Referring to the Sunday night violence at JNU, Raja said, "We strongly condemn the fascist attack on the JNU students and teachers."

Systematic assault on all Universities: Yechury

Condemning the attack on JNU students, CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury demanded for a prompt investigation and arrests of the accused.

He also demanded the immediate sacking of the Vice Chancellor of JNU over the series of incidents.
"Rampage continued for hours before the VC asked the police, which was standing outside the gate to intervene. That too happened after the LG tweeted that he has directed the police to take immediate action," he said.

"This constitutes an assault not only on higher education but also on region, rationality and democracy, " he added.

"They are trying to portray it as inter-student rivalry which is absolutely wrong. This is an organised pre planned attack by outsiders. Who they are was very clear from the slogans they were shouting. Whenever the students in protest were raising slogans 'Inquilab Zindabad' the slogan in return would come 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai', this clearly indicates from which side these people were brought in," he further said.

The CPI(M) General Secretary further claimed that in universities all over the country, there is a systematic assault being mounted under this government.

Delhi Police is under the Home Minister, therefore the culpability and liability lies there and they should also be held accountable for how this happened in the national capital, he added.

"Around 4.30 PM, a group of students, who are against the registration process moved aggressively from the front of the admin block and reached the hostels. ABVP, JNUSU trade blame over violence on JNU campus

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Jawaharlal University Students' Union (JNUSU) on Sunday jumped to trade blame after a masked mob of goons entered the campus premises and assaulted several students.

Terming the attack in JNU as 'undeclared emergency, ABVP shared a video of its national general secretary Nidhi Tripathi.

"It is unfortunate that for the past two months, Naxals have halted the academic process. They stopped the registration for papers. When the students demanded to register, they entered the hostels and assaulted them," Tripathi said in the video message.

In the tweet, ABVP claimed that the attack was organised "by the leftist goons of SFI, AISA and DSF on ABVP karyakartas and students in JNU."

JNUSU, on the other hand, accused the JNU unit of ABVP of the attack.

"AVBPJNU, you have attacked your own university, your professors and your classmates. By encouraging ABVP terrorists to enter the campus, by giving them information to help them single out Union Representatives, you have enabled terrorists like your ideological predecessors," JNUSU said in a tweet.

"The ABVP attackers have entered Koyna Hostel. This is an all-female hostel. The women, and mess workers, are terrified. The terrorists are trying to break the doors," JNUSU added in another tweet.

A masked mob on Sunday entered the university campus and assaulted several students and professors with sticks and rods.

"I have been brutally attacked by goons wearing masks. I am bleeding. I was brutally beaten up," JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh told reporters. She has been admitted to the AIIMS here for treatment.

JNU re-issues statement on violence after recalling it

In wake of the unprecedented violence in Jawaharlal Nehru University on Sunday, the varsity administration said there was a "law and order situation" in the campus and police had been called to maintain order.

However, the message, issued by the JNU Registrar, was subsequently withdrawn, before the varsity said there had been some confusion and the statement stood as it was.

According to the "urgent" message to the JNU Community, the Registrar said that "there was a law order situation in the JNU campus. Masked miscreants armed with sticks are roaming around, damaging property and attacking people".

"The JNU Administration has called the police to maintain order.

"This is the moment to remain calm and be on the alert. In view of the largeness of the campus number 100 can also be dialled.

"Efforts are already being made to tackle the miscreants," the message read.

There was no explanation why the statement was withdrawn, and then reinstated. No varsity official was available for comment.

Battleground JNU: What triggered the latest clashes?

New Delhi: What started with a minor scuffle between two groups of JNU students over registration in the new semester, within days turned the varsity campus into a battlefield on Sunday, leaving several students and teachers severely injured.

The violence that shook the entire nation as visuals of profusely bleeding girl students and injured teachers were shared saw its seeds planted on Friday when in an attempt to restrict students from getting registered for new semester, some students allegedly barged into the room used to provide power to Wifi connection to entire campus and shut down the connection.

Top administration officials said that the students were identified and the university is in process to get a FIR registered against them.

"At about 1 p.m., some 15-20 students barged into the Centre for Information System and locked the doors from inside. The electric connection to wifi devices were shut down by these students," the official had said.

The protesting students claimed that stopping the registration process was essential as the registration was being done as per hiked fee structure.

However, from early Saturday, cases of minor scuffles started to rise, with the Left-controlled JNUSU alleging that protesters were beaten up by students aligned with the RSS-affiliated ABVP. The allegation was met by counter allegations by ABVP.

But the situation turned ugly on Sunday when several masked individuals, both male and female, thrashed students, including girls, and teachers inside the varsity campus with wooden and metal rods.

Soon after this incident, widespread violence broke out in the campus with students, including girls, assaulted in their hostel rooms by masked miscreants and hostels were vandalised. JNUSU President Aishe Ghosh was hit over her eye, with an iron road and taken to a hospital.

Some teachers were also injured in the violence, in which outsiders were also allegedly involved.

Violence is the first resort of cowards and intellectually bankrupt, the party, an NDA ally, said.

Violence broke out at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Sunday night as masked men armed with sticks and rods attacked students and teachers and damaged property on the campus, prompting the administration to call in police which conducted a flag march.

At least 28 people, including JNU Students' Union (JNUSU) president Aishe Ghosh, were injured as chaos reigned on the campus for nearly two hours.

"The dastardly and heinous masked attack on the professors and students of JNU is shocking and appalling. Difference of opinion and dissent is democratic and should not and will not be allowed to be met with violence and assault. I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms," Goa Forward Party (GFP) president Vijai Sardesai said in a tweet.

Minutes later, the GFP, from its official handle, said "Violence is the first resort of cowards and the intellectually bankrupt. Only those ignorant of history will attempt to silence dissent and disagreements with such despicable methods. We strongly condemn the brutal attack on the teachers and students of JNU. Democracy lives!"

Eyewitnesses alleged the attackers entered the premises when a meeting was being held by JNU Teachers' Association on the issue of violence on campus and assaulted students and professors.

JNU admin condemns violence at campus, appeals for peace

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration condemned the violence which had broken out in its campus on January 5, leaving scores of people injured.

"On January 5, when students who have registered in the winter semester wanted to enter the school buildings, they were physically prevented by the agitating students. Since January 5 afternoon, the campus has witnessed scuffles at the schools as well as inside the hostel premises between the groups of students who wanted to stop the registration and those who wanted to register and continue their studies," the press note by JNU Registrar on Sunday read.

"Around 4.30 PM, a group of students, who are against the registration process moved aggressively from the front of the admin block and reached the hostels. The administration immediately contacted the police to come quickly and maintain law and order on the campus. However, by the time police came, the students who are for the registration were beaten up by a group of agitating students opposing the registration," the press note added.

Regarding the violence and vandalisation which had taken place inside the hostels in the campus, it said, "Some masked miscreants also entered the Periyar hostel rooms and attacked the students with sticks and rods. Some of the security guards doing duties at these places were also badly injured."

It further added, "The JNU administration strongly condemns any form of violence in the campus. It is unfortunate that a group of students with their violent means of protests are preventing thousands of non-agitating students from pursuing their academic activities. The JNU administration stands by every student who wants to continue their academic programs peacefully in the campus."

Meanwhile, JNU Vice-Chancellor, Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar expressed concern for the injured students. "The JNU administration feels great pain and anguish for the students who have sustained injuries in the violence that took place in the JNU campus. The JNU administration strongly condemns any form of violence in the campus," Kumar's tweet, which also had the press note by the university's Registrar, read.

18 injured students have been taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre after a masked mob entered the JNU and attacked them and professors with sticks and rods.

Terming the attack in JNU as 'undeclared emergency, ABVP shared a video of its national general secretary Nidhi Tripathi.
