New Delhi: A special judge hearing the Babri Masjid demolition case, involving BJP veterans L.K. Advani, M.M. Joshi and others, on Monday moved the Supreme Court seeking six months more time to complete the trial in the case.

The special judge hearing the case is going to retire on September 30, 2019.

Asking the Uttar Pradesh government to suggest a way how his tenure could be extended till he delivered the verdict in the case, a bench headed by Justice R.F. Nariman posted the hearing for July 19.

The Supreme Court had in 2017 revived the conspiracy charge in the Babri Masjid demolition case against Advani, Joshi, Kalyan Singh, Uma Bharti and others.

On April 19, 2017, it ordered the trial court to conduct day-to-day hearing and conclude the trial in the case within two years.

Intro:The Supreme court bench headed by Justice RF Nariman considered the request by Special judge, Lucknow CBI court for extending the time to more 6 months for completing the trial on Babri Masjid demolition case. The caae involves BJP senior leaders LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Uma Bharti and others.


Body:The special judge had written a letter to the apex court in may saying that he is due to superannuate on 30th septemeber,2019. The court today asked the UP government to find a mechanish by 19th july to extend the tenure of the speacial judge till he delivers the verdict on Babri Masjid demolition case.

On 19th April ,2017, the Supreme court had restored the charges against the BJP leaders, LK Advani, MM Joshi and Uma bharti among 13 others by allowing an appeal of CBI against the discharge given by the Allahbad HC. It also transferred the pending separate trial in a Rae Bareilly Magisterate court and clubbed it with the criminal proceedings in the Lucknow CBI court.

It also ordered cases to be heard on day to day to basis in 2 years. The bench said that Kalyan Singh will have a constitutional immunity till he is the governor of Rajasthan but when he relinquishes the office, additional charges shall be applied to him.
