New Delhi: Demonstrations and protests were held in Delhi on the 27th anniversary of the demolition of Babri Masjid by several political groups pressing the demand for speedy trial and punishment of the accused in the crime.
The protestors demanded that Supreme Court should hear the reconsideration petition of the Babri- Ram Janmabhoomi disputed site and those responsible for the Masjid demolition should be punished soon. They also slammed the Babri masjid verdict, saying it did not do justice to the 16th Century Babri Masjid and referred to the glaring contradictions in the verdict.
While addressing the gathering, the President of Lok Raj Sangathan S.K. Raghavan said that the Babri Masjid was not just a mosque but a national heritage. Both BJP and Congress are responsible for its demolition.
SDPI leader Taslim Rahmani said "We had been protesting for the Babri Masjid demolition for 26 years and we were assured that we will get justice from the Supreme Court but it did not happen. But even after this decision of the Apex Court, it seems that we will still have to demonstrate in the same way even then we will get justice."
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board’s Babri Masjid Committee convener, Dr SQR Ilyas noted that eight top leaders of the BJP including LK Advani, MM Joshi, Uma Bharti, Vinay Katihar etc were prominently involved in the crime but enjoyed impunity for no real reason or justification.
He further said the Supreme Court should admit the review petitions on its Babri Masjid judgment, in the same manner as it did in the Sabarimala case.
The demonstration started from Mandi House and culminated in a public meeting at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.
