New Delhi: Reacting sharply over the unprovoked attack on JNU students by unidentified elements last evening, the Congress on Monday accused the Narendra Modi government of being 'intolerant', saying it was trying to suppress 'independent views' over the matters of national importance.

Congress general secretary K C Venugopal

"What we are witnessing for the last one month is, an intolerant government suppressing independent views," Congress general secretary K C Venugopal told media persons here.

He further stated that independent voices are a strength of India but the Modi government has been 'intolerant' against people raising their concern over the newly amended citizenship act.

The Congress leader also raised question over the role of the city police, asking where was it when 'gundas' (anti-social elements) entered the JNU campus.

"What is happening in the national capital? Why the police did not take any action...there was a law and order situation in the city," he said, adding that all these anti-social elements have the support of the government.

"If the government thinks it would be able to suppress people with independent views, then it's mistaken," the Congress leader said, asking what the provocation was and why the students were attacked?

Venugopal also demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident, saying the Congress stands by the innocent students.

New Delhi: The Congress party alleged that the attack on Jawaharlal Nehru University students by masked miscreants, on Sunday, reflects the "Government's ill motive to suppress the independent voices of Indian students."

Body:A clash broke out between members of JNU's Students Union (JNUSU) and Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on the university campus, on Sunday.

While speaking over the matter, Congress party's General Secretary KC Venugopal said, "Government's ill motive to attack on the independent view of Indian students has been reflected through this latest JNU attack. This incident is connected with all the past incidents occurred due to Citizenship Amendment Act. Our students has their independent views and those are the strengths of our nation. But this government is intolerant to hear all these views."

Venugopal also alleged Delhi Police of being a "mute spectator". He said, "Delhi Police didn't do anything, yesterday. They became a mute spectator. Entire law and order is being questioned, which is quite unfortunate."

"If this government is thinking that they can suppress the views of students through such kind of violence, I must say they've been mistaken. These students know how to overcome this situation," he asserted.

Conclusion:KC Venugopal, on the behalf of Congress party, demands judicial enquiry over this matter. "Indian Natuonal Congress is with their students. If this government will try to suppress their voices through undemocratic ways, we'll stand by our students," he said.
