Assam Rifles jawan killed in Arunachal ambush cremated

Assam Rifles jawan Birendra Singh, who was killed in an ambush by the suspected militants in Arunachal Pradesh, served the Rifles unit for 35 years. He was cremated today in his native village Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh.

Mainpuri (Uttar Pradesh): Last rites of Assam Rifles Jawan Birendra Singh, who was killed in a militant attack in Arunachal Pradesh, was performed today in his native village in Uttar Pradesh. Singh lost his life when the suspected militants carried out an attack on a water tanker of the 19 Assam Rifles.

The entire village gathered to pay homage to the brave soldier and mortal remains of the soldier was consigned to flames. Hie elder son lit the pyres.

A pall of gloom descended upon the family members of the military personnel when the news of his demise reached Mainpuri, his native village. Joined Assam Rifle unit in 1985, Birendra Singh was associated with this profession for the last 35 years. The soldier had visited his village almost a year ago and was planning to visit again soon.

On October 4th, Singh was on a call with his wife and had told her that he is going to water tanker for his duty, a few minutes before the deadly mishap. After a while, his wife received a call from the Army unit, saying that Singh was killed in a militant attack.

The mortal remains of the jawan were initially taken to Assam Rifles Head Quarters from where it was flown down to Delhi Airport on Tuesday. At around 11.30 pm, the body of the martyred soldier reached Mainpuri's Nanamau.

Singh is survived by his wife and three children. Various Army personnel paid tributes to the soldier and praised him for his valour and sacrifice. His elder son works as an NDRF employee and his younger son is engaged in farming.

The suspected armed attack was perpetrated near Hetlong village when the water tanker was travelling to a village to fetch water. The militants laid an ambush and when they saw an approaching water tanker of the Assam rifles in their range, they fired grenades and sprayed it with bullets from automatic weapons.

"The Chief Minister Yogi Aditynath announced an ex gratia of Rs 50 lakh for his kin. The chief minister has also announced a government job for one member of the fallen soldier family. A road will be named after Yadav," said the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) release.
