Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal submits Clause 6 committee report to Shah

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal submitted Clause 6 committee report to Union Home Minister Amit Shah which suggested that Inner Line Permit should be implemented in Assam. It further said that 1951 should be the cut-off year for defining the indigenous people of Assam.

New Delhi: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday submitted the Clause 6 committee report to Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi. According to official sources, Sonowal submitted the report after meeting Shah at his residence late evening.

A thirteen member committee headed by retired Justice Biplab Kumar Sarma on Clause 6 earlier submitted its report to Chief Minister Sonowal in Guwahati. The Clause 6 committee in its report had suggested that Inner Line Permit (ILP) should be implemented in Assam. The committee further said that 1951 should be the cut-off year for defining the indigenous people of Assam.

The high powered committee was setup by the Centre in July 2019. The Clause 6 of historic Assam Accord envisages constitutional, legislative and administrative measures to safeguard, protect, preserve and promote the cultural, social, linguistic identity and heritage of the Assamese people.
