Asian University Rankings 2020: 8 Indian institutes among top 100

Eight Indian institutes had made it to the top 100 list of the Asia University Rankings 2020 which was conducted by British ranking agency Times Higher Education. Six IITs are among the list of eight Indian institutes.

New Delhi: The Asia University Rankings 2020 which was conducted by British ranking agency “Times Higher Education” (THE) has given eight positions to Indian universities among the top 100 universities in Asia.

In India the list of eight universities in Asia University Rankings are the six Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) which includes -- Delhi, Kharagpur, Ropar, Indore, Kanpur, and Roorkee. Apart from the IITs other institutes include -- Bengaluru's Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and Institute of Chemical Technology.

This year Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) from Delhi and Kharagpur have made a drastic improvement which made the IIT Delhi to get the 67th position, while IIT Kharagpur reached 59th position.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru has come down its position but maintained the position among the top 100 with Asian rank of 36.

IIT Ropar has significantly jumped at 47th position while it was not even in the 100 positions last year, while IIT Indore was at 55th position.

Institute of Chemical Technology has joined for the first time in the league with 97th position.

“Both regionally and globally, it is clear that India’s higher education system has a lot to show about. The positive improvements are seen by some of India’s older institutions in this year’s. THE Asia Rankings should be welcome a positive story that demonstrates a continued and growing ability to compete among the world’s very best," said Phil Baty, chief knowledge officer of THE.

The Asian ranking report has mentioned that IITs are improving in terms of teaching, research and industry metrics compared to the previous year 2019. “At the same time they are seeing a downward trend in scores and continued unchanged when it comes to internationalization, only IIT Bombay and IIT Madras have seen the improvement," THE said.

Top five Asian universities

The top five Asian universities are -- Tsinghua University and Peking University (both in China), National University of Singapore, University Hong Kong, and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
