Arrest or surrender?: Akhilesh asks Yogi govt after cops take Vikas Dubey into custody

The opposition parties posed a set of questions questioning the role of Uttar Pradesh Police in the Vikas Dubey arrest case. SP Supremo Akhilesh Yadav asked the Yogi Adityanath government to issue a clarification whether it was s 'surrender' or an 'arrest'.

Lucknow: After gangster Vikas Dubey, wanted in connection with the Kanur ambush in which eight police personnel were killed, was nabbed in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain, Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo Akhilesh Yadav asked the Uttar Pradesh government on Thursday to clarify whether it was a 'surrender' or an 'arrest'.

"News is coming that the main accused in the Kanpur case is in police custody. If this is true, the government should clarify whether it was a surrender or an arrest. Besides, the CDR (call details record) should be made public so that those hand in glove with him could be exposed," he said in a tweet in Hindi.

Dubey, who was on the run since the Kanpur ambush on Friday and who carried a reward of Rs 5 lakh on information leading to his arrest, was nabbed in Ujjain

on Thursday morning.Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra confirmed the development, saying the gangster was in the custody of the state police.

In an expected development, the opposition also questioned the role of the Uttar Pradesh Police in the Vikas Dubey case and the related encounters of five criminals.

Senior Congress leader Jitin Prasada tweeted after the STF detained Khushi, wife of Amar Dubey, who was shot dead in Hamirpur on Wednesday.

Khushi's arrest has not been announced by the STF, but the local people have confirmed that Amar's relatives and his wife were 'taken away' by the police and have not returned yet.

Amar had been married to Khushi on June 29 -- just three days before the Bikru village encounter. She was widowed on Wednesday, a week after being married.

Jitin Prasada tweeted, "Khushi probably had no choice being married off to Amar and continues to suffer as a widow and facing police harassment. Get Vikas Dubey alive and expose the links and the rot in the system from top to bottom and justice prevails." (sic)

The reaction of the opposition leaders comes after cops gunned down five aides of wanted criminal Vikas Dubey in an encounter. Dubey was arrested from Ujjain's Mahakal temple when he was identified by a team of security guards following which the cops were alerted.

How Vikas Dubey, after evading the cops for almost a week, managed to travel to Haryana to Rajasthan to Madhya Pardesh is among the questions being raised about his arrest. (With input from agencies)
