Kolkata: Angry Kolkatans on Saturday staged protests across various parts of the city over administration failure to restore power and water supply even after three days.
As the death toll due to super cyclone Amphan in West Bengal crossed 85, people took to the streets to get their greivances heard. Many of them had been placing phone calls to Calcutta Municipal Corporation officials but to no avail, a local source said.
The protest initially started in Madhyamgram city of Kolkata but by evening, it spread to adjoining districts, North 24 Parganas, Howrah and Hooghly. According to reports, some protesters claimed that cops even resorted to baton charge to disperse the crowd. "We haven't been getting electricity for straight three days and adding to that, drinking water is also unavailable. The officials aren't paying any heed to our problems," a protester said.
Lakhs of people were rendered homeless as Cyclone Amphan forced the city to come to a standstill. However, the authorities on the other hand are claiming that every effort is being taken to get the city back to normal.
