Bengaluru: A 60-year old man was taken aback when he spotted his photograph being telecast on news channels as a 'terror suspect' on Thursday.
A wristwatch seller by profession, Riyaz Ahmed is the breadwinner for his 10-member family. While some of his children are married, some live separately.
Ahmed, a resident of Chandra Layout Gangondanahalli, has been selling watches near Majestic metro station for the past several years. He reached the Upparpet police station and met DCP to clear the dust around his identity.
In his complaint, Ahmed said, "All Muslims or men with beard must not be considered terrorists. I have an identity card. I have been selling watches on streets in Majestic for over 30 years now. I feel ashamed to be identified as a terror suspect. So, I request to consider my complaint and take action against those who defamed me."
Commenting on the matter, DCP Ravi Channannanavar said that there was information that the same day, another man, Ahmed's look-alike, was seen walking around the Majestic metro station. A special police team had launched a search to nab him, he added.
State general secretary of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike Kranti Sene, Mohmed Saifulla helped Ahmed lodge a complaint. Agitated over the entire episode, he said complaint would be filed against Bengaluru metro officials who, without any solid proof against Ahmed, gave CCTV footages to news channels which telecast his photo as a terror suspect.
