New Delhi: Holding BJP governments responsible for violence during anti-CAA protests, Left parties - CPI and CPI (M) - on Wednesday said that all opposition parties should come together to oppose the Narendra Modi government on the amended citizenship law and the proposed NRC.
Speaking to the ETV Bharat here, Sitaram Yechury, general secretary, CPI (M), said that violence during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) across India took place only in BJP-ruled states.
"People know that the government is doing it. They cannot mislead the people on it anymore," he said, adding that all opposition parties must get united and oppose the government.
Expressing similar views, CPI general secretary D Raja said it's the government that has been instigating violence.
"UP is one state where we witnessed state-sponsored violence (during the anti-CAA protests)," he said.
On being asked if the opposition was united on the issue, he gave the answer in affirmative. When questioned if it was so why didn't several parties come for the opposition meet convened by the Congress a few days ago, the CPI leader said they must be busy with something otherwise all would have come.
He, however, urged all opposition parties to be united on the issue.
