New Delhi: A Mumbai based lawyer, Rizwan Siddquee, has written a letter to the Attorney General of India, KK Venugopal, seeking his consent to initiate contempt proceedings against stand up comedian Kunal Kamra for his 11th November tweets criticising Supreme Court on granting bail to Republic TV Editor in chief Arnab Goswami.
A special bench comprising of Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice Indira Bannerjee heard Arnab Goswami's plea yesterday which had challenged the Bombay High Court order of denying him interim bail.
Court assembled for his plea when it is on Diwali vacation.
He is an accused under abetment to suicide of an interior designer whom he owed money.
Yesterday while granting the apex court also had made some strong observations which said that personal liberty can not be denied to him irrespective of his ideologies and that the High Court was in error for not granting him bail.
In response to it, Kamra posted 4 tweets criticising the court and had also posted a picture of the apex court edited in orange colour depicting inclination towards BJP.
Rizwan Siddiqui has contended that Kamra has millions of followers and his such statements can impact him followers who also might make such allegations when they are not in favour of the judgement. Adding on further he said that belief of people in the judiciary should not be compromised with because of a "calculated and well-timed propaganda".
The court had heard Goswami's plea for the whole day and eventually had granted him bail. This invited criticism from some prominent personalities who alleged that court is giving preferential treatment to Goswami when many other activists and journalists are also in jail without any basis and trial. SCBA president Dushyant Dave also had written to CJI complaining of preferential treatment.
