New Delhi: As per the data released by the office of Chief Justice of India, SA Bobde, the total number of cases taken up in 22 days during the lockdown for hearing as on May 1, is 835 which includes 297 connected matters i.e similar petitions which are tagged together for hearing.
The judgement has been delivered in 325 cases which also includes 297 connected matters.
A total number of 116 benches have presided over the hearings through video conferencing and some matters have been taken up in chambers of the judges itself. 43 benches have heard the main matters and 73 benches have sat for review petitions, as per the data.
The pending cases are not known as the Supreme Court's website has not uploaded the data in the month of April and May.
Usually, the number of pending cases, as on the first of every month, is uploaded on the site but it has not been uploaded for 1st April and 1st May and is available only till 1st of March.
Going by the data released for earlier months, as on 2nd January, 59,859 cases, on 1st February 59,670 cases and on 1st March 60,469 were pending in the Supreme Court.
Since the lockdown, which was imposed from March 24, the Supreme Court has been hearing only extremely urgent matters and have started hearing bail matters through single judge bench from 13th May.
All the judges do not hear the cases every day and few virtual courts have been operating since the lockdown.
With few matters listed and few benches sitting the number of cases which are dealt with on a daily basis has been drastically reduced.
Although, to make up for the loss the Court has cut short its summer vacation and has decided to work as much as possible at least till 19th June and the situation will be regularly monitored by the judges in case of taking further decisions.
