60,469 cases pending in Supreme Court

According to data available on the Supreme court's website, as many as 60,469 cases are pending at Supreme court as on March 1, 2020. Amid the rising cases of COVID-19, the Supreme court decided to hear only urgent cases through video conferencing.

New Delhi: The number of cases pending at Supreme court stood at 60,469 as on March 1, 2020, according to data available on the Supreme court's website.

The data shows that pending cases at the apex court stood at 59,670 as on April 1, 2020, and pendency of cases rose to 60,469 within one month period. This includes incomplete matters as well as fresh admission cases.

Constitution bench matters involving constitutional interpretation and that are essential for disposal of matters involving specific laws are 551. This includes 52 main matters and 499 connected matters which will be heard together.

To be specific, there were 402 cases pending before the five-judge constitution bench, 13 cases before the seven-judge bench and 136 cases before the nine-judge bench.

The matter relating to the issue of women's entry in Sabarimala temple is pending before the nine-bench constitution bench along with other contentious issues of alleged discrimination against Muslim and Parsi women. The matter was expected to be heard after Holi break. But, now amid the rising cases of COVID-19, the Supreme court decided to hear only urgent cases through video conferencing.

There are 40,723 fresh cases and as many as 19,746 regularly heard cases. The data shows 19.96% of the total pending matters are incomplete,i.e, the processing fee isn't paid or hasn't served the notice or pleadings haven't been completed. Of the total 60,469 cases, 12,071 are incomplete cases which cannot be listed before the court.

As of now, no date is specified as on when the court will resume normal functioning.
