45 newly-elected RS members take oath; Venkaiah Naidu urges them to uphold rules

As many as 45 newly-elected Rajya Sabha MPs, including former PM H.D. Devegowda, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, Congress leader Digvijaya Singh, and BJP leader Bhuvaneshwar Kalita, took oath in the presence of Rajya Sabha Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu in the Upper House chamber. Naidu urged them to uphold rules and procedures while discharging their duties as lawmakers.

New Delhi: Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu urged 45 newly-elected members of the House who took oath on Wednesday not to fall prey to disruptions and to uphold rules and procedures while discharging their duties as lawmakers.

The new members, including 36 first-timers, took the oath of office in the Rajya Sabha chamber while following physical distancing norms.

The chairman said that the new MPs will be nominated in committees soon.

Around 45 of the 61 newly-elected members of the Rajya Sabha took oath on Wednesday, including former Prime Minister H.D. Devegowda, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, Congress leader Digvijaya Singh, and BJP's Bhuvaneshwar Kalita.

Around 45 MPs-elect had given their confirmation to take oath in the presence of Rajya Sabha Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu on Wednesday.

This was for the first time that the new members have taken oath in the Upper House chamber when Parliament is not in session.

The oath-taking ceremony was earlier postponed due to the nationwide lockdown amid the Covid-19 outbreak.

The voting to the Rajya Sabha's vacant seats was held in June 2020.

Kalita had quit the Congress on the day the Bill to modify Article 370 of the Constitution with regards to Jammu and Kashmir was tabled in the Rajya Sabha last year.

First-timers among the new members include Priyanka Chaturvedi, who last year quit the Congress to join the Shiv Sena and Congress leader Shaktisinh Gohil.

Leaders who took oath as Rajya Sabha MPs:

  • Meanwhile, BJP leader Jyotiraditya M Scindia has taken oath as Rajya Sabha member from Madhya Pradesh. Scindia had dumped the Congress earlier this year to join the BJP.

  • After taking oath as the Rajya Sabha member from Rajasthan, Congress leader K.C. Venugopal thanked Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi and party former Chief Rahul Gandhi for supporting him. He also promised to deliver his duties with the utmost sincerity.

  • Vivek Thakur, son of former Union Minister and former Rajya Sabha MP CP Thakur, has taken oath as BJP Rajya Sabha MP from Bihar on Wednesday.

Speaking exclusively with ETV Bharat, Thakur thanked BJP members and said that he will stand on every expectation of the public.

"I will raise the concerns of the people of Bihar in the Rajya Sabha and will work for the betterment of the people outside the Parliament. It is my goal to serve the people. Bihar is in the clutches of both COVID-19 pandemic and flood, and the state government and the Centre must work in coordination to normalise the situation," he said.

People are having huge expectations from Vivek as his father was the voice of Bihar in the Parliament.

Vivek Thakur has also been a member of Bihar Legislative Council.
