CPI-M leaders meet Governor over attack on Sarkar

Ex-Rajya Sabha MP and veteran CPI-M leader Narayan Kar claimed that the political rights of the opposition parties, especially the CPI-M was being trampled by the ruling party.

Agartala (Tripura): Ex-Rajya Sabha MP and veteran CPI-M leader Narayan Kar on Wednesday urged Governor of Tripura Ramesh Bais to ensure freedom for the political activities of opposition parties.

Kar claimed that the political rights of the opposition parties, especially the CPI-M was being trampled by the ruling party.

While reacting to the recent attacks on opposition leader Manik Sarkar, he observed that the ruling party was furious with the opposition and that it could cross any limits to eradicate dissent.

Addressing a press conference at the CPI-M state headquarters after meeting Governor of Tripura Ramesh Bais, he said, “A battery of CPIM leaders comprising Rama Das, former Minister Naresh Jamatia and I met his Excellency Governor of Tripura to apprise him about the ground reality of politically sponsored violence and terror. We have urged him to ensure that all the political parties can practice their constitution recognized rights”.

Kar during the conversation with the Governor is said to have informed about the series of incidents that had taken place so far in the state. Raising the issue of the attack on ex-Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, he said, “A memorandum in this regard has been handed over to him from our part. The memorandum carried detailed information regarding the Santirbazar incident where the incumbent leader of the opposition and former Chief Minister of the state was attacked”.

The Governor, he said, gave us a patient hearing and assured us that he would call the Chief Minister and Director General of Police to check progress in the inquiry. He had also assured us that he would talk to local SDM and SP seeking a report on the matter, he added.

In Kar’s words, "The Governor of Tripura has assured the Left delegation that no political clash shall take place in any part of the state after their meeting."
