Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh): In wake of a rapid spike in the number of COVID-19 cases and subsequent deaths, the demand for coffins in Vijayawada has increased 10 times in the last fortnight. Several hospitals earmarked for COVID-19 patients are located in and around Vijaywada.
To fulfill the demand, coffin makers have been working round the clock. Until two weeks ago, coffin makers used to make a limited number of coffins and sold only around six coffins a day. However, since the last 15 days, a minimum of 60 coffins are being sold on a daily basis, forcing the workers to toil round the clock. In addition to Vijayawada, these coffins cater to demands from Guntur and West Godavari too.

Humanitarian side
Taking cognizance of the matter and the plight of the families of those deceased due to COVID-19, the coffin makers said they have reduced the price of coffins, going against the conventional demand-supply equation.
"We used to sell coffins at an average of Rs 3,000 per piece. However, people are now in grave need more than ever and we do not wish to exploit them. Therefore, we are selling coffins for a lesser price," a coffin maker said.
As per the data released by the Andhra Pradesh government, there are 14,669 positive cases in the state. In the last 24 hours, 71 people died. As many as 75,209 people are in home isolation.
