Mahant Narendra Giri suicide: Akhara Parishad cries foul, demands CBI enquiry

Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad expressed suspicion over the death of Mahant Narendra Giri and has demanded that the matter should be given to Central Bureau of Investigation. An auposy report is awaited while charges of abetment to suicide has been lodged against disciples Anand Giri and two others. According to police, the Mahant had hung himself from the noose in his Baghambri Math ashram

Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh): The Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad has expressed suspicion over the death of Mahant Narendra Giri and has demanded that the matter should be given to CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) for a fair investigation. According to police, the Mahant had hung himself from the noose in his Baghambri Math ashram.

Mahant Narendra Giri, president of Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad, had resorted to the extreme step at his Baghambri Math ashram on Monday. Meanwhile, a charge of abetment to suicide has been lodged against Anand Giri and two others in the First Information Report (FIR) under Section 306.

"The matter should be given to CBI and should be investigated fairly," Devendra Singh, vice-president of Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad, said.

In the initial investigation, police also recovered 6 pages of suicide notes from the spot, in which his disciple Anand Giri, Agha Tiwari and one other has been named.

The Mahant had also mentioned in the note that he had tried to kill self a week ago. It is also learnt that the top seer had mentioned who should be handed the responsibility of the Akahara Parishad after his death.

Meanwhile, a police complaint was also filed late night on Monday night on behalf of Amar Giri, the second disciple of Mahant Narendra Giri.

In the complaint, Anand Giri has been held responsible for the death of Mahant Narendra Giri. However, the on-duty police officials did not confirm the registration of the case. Meanwhile, Swami Anand Giri from Uttarakhand was taken into custody by the UP Police. Simultaneously, in Prayagraj, the police took Aadya Tiwari into custody and began the interrogation.

"Anand Giri has been taken to Uttar Pradesh by the state police as to it was their matter," Haridwar SP City Kamlesh Upadhyay said.

On the other hand, Anand Giri has termed the allegation as a 'conspiracy'. "It is a big conspiracy by people who used to extort money from Guruji and wrote my name in the letter. It needs to be investigated as guru Ji has not written a letter in his life and could not do suicide. His handwriting needs to be probed," Giri said.

The post mortem of Mahant Narendra Giri will be done on Tuesday afternoon and that the autopsy would be done by a panel of doctors and the entire process would be video recorded.

The door of the monastery will be kept open for the public to pay their final respects. An appeal has also been made to the general public on behalf of the Akhara Parishad that they should reach after 11.30 am. Also, the seer will be laid to rest within the monastery complex.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi AdityaNath paid his last tribute to Mahant Narendra Giri at Prayagraj. He stated that the death of Mahant Narendra Giri is an irreparable loss to the spiritual society.

"Several pieces of evidence have been collected regarding the incident (death of President of Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad, Mahant Narendra Giri). A team of senior police officials incl ADG Zone, IG Range, DIG Prayagraj is investing the case. The culprit will not be spared," says CM Yogi Adityanath.
