AIIMS director stresses on need for 'strategy' to inoculate more citizens

Dr. Randeep Guleria said a policy should be drawn up to increase the rate of vaccination in the country. He said Covid-19 vaccines will be available in large amounts probably in about two months' time with various manufacturers opening more plants in the country.

New Delhi: Director of All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) Dr. Randeep Guleria said a policy should be drawn up to make increase the rate of vaccination in the country.

"We'll not be able to vaccinate everyone in a day or two or a month. So, I think we should develop a strategy of giving appointments that could be 2, 3 or 4 months later for younger age group and gradually work on a strategy to get more people can be vaccinated," he said

He said Covid-19 vaccines will be available in large amounts probably in about two months' time with various manufacturers opening more plants in the country.

"There'll be more vaccine doses available. We'll get vaccines from outside too," Dr Guleria said.

"Covishield, Covaxin, Sputnik will be manufactured in India by the new manufacturing plants. Sputnik has tied up with a number of companies in India to manufacture vaccines. New plants being set up by Bharat Biotech and Serum Institute of India (SII). By July-Aug we'll have large no. of doses available, he said.

"I still believe that mortality due to COVID-19 is much higher in those with comorbidities & elderly, we should focus on trying to vaccinate them at the earliest & also look at the larger population who can be vaccinated in graded manner," Dr Guleria opined.
