New Delhi: Amid the prevailing tense situation in Afghanistan, Afghan refugees living in India have been going from pillar to post to apply for visas in many countries. UNHCR-registered Afghan on Thursday reached the embassies of the US, Canada and Australia to apply for asylum in these countries.

Najibullah, a resident of Kabul, reached outside the American embassy, however, could not meet any official.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, he said that UNHCR only allows him to live in India but does guarantee him the amenities a citizen has in a country. As he cannot do a job here it is very difficult for him to make a living.

Najibullah lives in a rented flat in the Tilaknagar area of Delhi. He has his own house in Kabul which he had given on rent. It was only with the rent money that Najibullah was able to take care of his family in Delhi. After the Taliban's capture, their tenants have also left the house and there is no contact with them now. In such a situation, they do not have any source of income for now.

He also said that earlier he was hopeful that the situation in Afghanistan would improve and he would be able to return to his country. However, that is far from possible now and demanded a refugee status in other countries.

Najibullah is not the only Afghan national who hopes to be granted refugee status in the US, Canada, Australia or India. Ever since the Taliban took over Afghanistan, Afghan refugees living in Delhi have been going from post to pillar hoping for citizenship or refugee status in other countries.
