Five to six families of labourers were living near Palod for the last five years. Meanwhile, around 12 pm on Monday, the driver of a dumper heading towards Mandvi from Kim hit a tractor laden with sugarcane heading towards Kim Char. After hitting the tractor, the dumper driver lost control of the steering wheel and drove it over the pavement where the labourers were sleeping.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the tragic road accident. Taking to Twitter, Prime Minister wrote, "The loss of lives due to a truck accident in Surat is tragic. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. Praying that the injured recover at the earliest."

The PMO also announced Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia for the kin of those who had died, and Rs 50,000 to those who had been injured.

Meanwhile, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 Lakhs each to the next of the kin of those who lost their lives in the accident.

The Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot also expressed grief over the tragic road accident. Taking to his Twitter handle, he wrote," deeply saddened to know many labourers from Banswara, Rajasthan have lost lives after a truck ran over them as they were sleeping near the road in Surat. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for the speedy recovery of those injured.

The CM also said that Rajasthan govt will also provide Rs 2 lakh compensation to the family of the deceased and  Rs 50,000 to those injured from CM Relief Fund.

Gujarat: Fifteen migrant labourers sleeping by the roadside in Gujarat's Surat district were killed on late Monday night, after being crushed under a speeding truck, police said.

The tragedy took place near Kosamba village, around 60 km from Surat, police said, adding that all those killed hailed from Rajasthan.

The truck ran over them on the Kim-Mandvi road, police said. While 12 persons died on the spot, three of the eight injured died in a nearby hospital, police said.

Upon learning of the incident, a police convoy, including senior district police officials, rushed to the spot.
