Australia's Bureau of Meteorology confirmed the January record on Friday.

Australia's scorching start to 2019, in which the mean temperature across the country for the first time exceeded 30 degrees Celsius, followed Australia's third-hottest year on record.

Only 2005 and 2013 were warmer than 2018, which ended with the hottest December on record.

Heat-stressed bats dropped dead from trees by the thousands in Victoria state and bitumen roads melted in New South Wales during heatwaves last month.

The South Australia state capital Adelaide on 24 January recorded the hottest day ever for a major Australian city, a searing 46.6 C.

On the same day, the South Australian town of Port Augusta, population 15,000, recorded 49.5 Celsius, the highest maximum anywhere in Australia last month.

Bureau climatologists described January's heat as unprecedented. The main contributor to the heat was a persistent high-pressure system over the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand that blocked cold fronts from reaching southern Australia.

While rainfall was below-average for most of the country, northern Queensland state saw rivers bursting their banks, leading to flooded streets and a disaster declaration around the city of Townsville.

Rannells: "I know, you really brought down the room.  Sorry."
Cheadle: "Yeah, brought down the room.  We were having so much fun talking about clothing optional."
Rannells: "Who is at the Super Bowl?  Who is at the half time?"
Cheadle: "Oh, he's going to do it – it's Travis Scott, he's going to perform.  And Maroon 5."
Rannells: "Oh great, sure.  Yeah, Maroon 5."
Cheadle: "Come on guys, really?  You haven't been watching what's going on with the NFL yet this year?  You're going to ..." (waves hand)
Rannells: "Maroon 5, yeah."
(Reporter: "You're disappointed in both of them?")
Cheadle: "Yeah, yeah, yeah.  I am."
Rannells: "Who were you rooting for?  Blink-182?  Train?  Did you want Train to come?"
Cheadle: "No. I want it to be like the Oscars.  I want it to be like the Oscars – I want no performers at the halftime."
Rannells: "I feel like that's what the Oscars should just be like what they did initially and they just read off the – like, we will do it."
Cheadle: "Yeah.  Well, you know what they're going to do this year: the presenters are going to riff longer.  Just what you wanted!  Just what you wanted at your Oscars – more presenter riffing."
Rannells: "I can't wait.  Yeah, let's hear what all those people are saying."
Cheadle: "More bits!  More bits!"
Rannells: "I love a good actor bit!  Oof!"

"Now I'm in LA and you know, so I'm rooting for the Rams, although I do have an autographed jersey from Tom Brady and he is kind of...  You know, the thing with Tom Brady is, you just, he's just good, you know what I mean?  As mad as you can be, you can not root for him, but you can't not give the man credit.  It's like, first they said the balls weren't inflated.  I'm like, he plays good with fucking inflated balls, skinny balls, it just - it doesn't matter.  All the balls – I was like, 'Well, they blew the balls up properly and then he came back and beat the...'  No, when he came back and beat Atlanta, that's when I was like, 'Oh wow, he's a beast,' you know."

STORYLINE:
DON CHEADLE DISAPPOINTED IN SUPER BOWL HALFTIME PERFORMERS
Don Cheadle is disappointed in Maroon 5 and Travis Scott for performing at the Super Bowl on Sunday.
"Come on guys, really?  You haven't been watching what's going on with the NFL yet this year?" Cheadle said Thursday (31 JANUARY 2019) while promoting his "Black Monday" TV series alongside co-star Andrew Rannells.  "I want it to be like the Oscars – I want no performers at the halftime."
Other artists reportedly turned down the gig in support of social justice protests that have roiled the NFL in recent years.
Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick helped start a wave of protests by kneeling during the national anthem to raise awareness to police brutality, racial inequality and other social issues.
As for the action on the field, the 54-year-old actor is rooting against the New England Patriots.
"I just want to see the Patriots lose," he said. " Bye, Patriots. How dare they?  Because they did that to my Broncos, man.  My Broncos are supposed to be there, or at least my Chiefs are supposed to be there.  I didn't like how that game went down."
But his "Black Monday" co-star Regina Hall is a bit more balanced.  She's a Washington Redskins fan originally, and rooting for the Los Angeles Rams in the game.  But she marvels at the talent of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.
"You know, the thing with Tom Brady is, you just, he's just good, you know what I mean?  As mad as you can be, you can not root for him, but you can't not give the man credit.  It's like, first they said the balls weren't inflated.  I'm like, he plays good with... inflated balls, skinny balls, it just - it doesn't matter.  All the balls – I was like, 'Well, they blew the balls up properly and then he came back and beat the...'  No, when he came back and beat Atlanta, that's when I was like, 'Oh wow, he's a beast,' you know."she said.
