Netivot, Southern Israel: The Israeli military said Hamas militants fired some 30 rockets from southern Gaza. It said its Iron Dome rocket-defence system intercepted several launches.
Earlier on Monday a rocket landed on a house in central Israel injuring seven people.
In response to the surprise rocket attack from the Palestinian territory the Israeli forces struck targets across the Gaza Strip, including the offices of Hamas' supreme leader.
The military also bolstered its troops and rocket-defence systems in anticipation of a new round of heavy fighting with the Islamic militant group.

It said the defence system was not activated because the attack in central Israel had not been anticipated.
The army added it was reinforcing its missile defence batteries in preparation for an escalation.
Late Monday Hamas said a cease-fire brokered by Egypt had been reached.
Israel did not confirm the development.
