Australia wants to kill '20 lakh' cats! Why?

Australia is planning to kill more than 20 million cats by 2020 by airdropping poisonous sausages. Australian authorities consider this animal as a major threat to 22 out of 34 extinct species.

Hyderabad: Believe it or not, but Australian authorities are planning to kill more than 20 lakh feral cats by airdropping poisonous sausages.

According to a New York Times report, the Australian government has declared a plan in 2015 to kill 20 lakh feral cats by 2020.

Around 2,11,560 feral cats were killed in the first year, the media house reported quoting the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

Earlier, the cats were trapped and was shot by the official. But, now they are poisoned.

Kangaroo meat, herbs, chicken fat, spices are mixed with 1080 poison which is deadly for feral cats and airdropped to killed the animals. It takes only 15 minutes for the animal to die after consuming the sausage.

Why the mass killing

Australian authorities consider these cats are major threats to 22 out of 34 extinct species in Australia.

According to a journal published on Biological Conservation in 2017, these cats kill nearly 377 million birds and 649 reptiles every year.

“Feral cats are a real menace and a very significant threat to the health of our ecosystem,” Australia’s former environment minister Josh Frydenberg said.
