Trump jousts with reporters over Ukraine call

New York: President Donald Trump denied that he ever told the President of Ukraine that his country would only get US aid if they investigated the son of Democratic rival Joe Biden.

On Monday at the sidelines of the United Nations, Trump said emphatically: "I didn't do it."

He said that he hoped people would be able to eventually see a transcript of the call. He says if his critics ever see it, they will be "very disappointed."

Moments later, he denied telling reporters he hoped they would "see the call," saying "it may get released."

"I don't think it's a great precedent to be releasing calls with foreign countries, heads of foreign countries," he told the reporters.

"So, I don't think it's a great precedent," he said.

Trump focused on the fact that he didn't put "any pressure" on Ukraine to investigate Hunter Biden.

His comments came amid reports he pressured Ukraine's leader to help investigate political rival Joe Biden at the same time the White House was withholding $250 million in aid to the Eastern European nation.

As he sat with Poland's President Andrzej Duda, Trump told reporters he harbours concerns that European countries, such as France and Germany, should provide more aid to Ukraine.

"Why aren't other countries helping Ukraine more? Why is it always the United States, and I've been saying that from the beginning."

Trump also said that he has agreed to increase the US military presence in Poland not because of any Russian threat, but because Poland agreed to pay for the installations needed to support US troops, and because the two countries worked out a deal.

"It's very good for us," Trump said.
