Third summit with North Korea 'at some point', says Trump

US President Donald Trump said "at some point," he and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will have a third meeting. He also said Kim wrote a beautiful letter on his birthday.

Washington: US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that "at some point," he and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will have a third meeting.

Trump was speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, reiterating that both had exchanged letters recently.

"He wrote me a beautiful letter birthday," Trump said. "We get along very well."

Formal talks between the US and North Korea broke down after a failed summit between Kim and Trump in February in Vietnam.

But earlier in June Trump told US reporters he received a "beautiful" letter from Kim, without revealing what was written.

The official stances remain the same. The US is demanding that North Korea abandon its nuclear weapons entirely before international sanctions are lifted. North Korea is seeking a step-by-step approach in which moves toward denuclearization are matched by concessions from the US, notably a relaxation of the sanctions.
