On the condition of anonymity, an immigration official said that migrants would initially be taken to an immigration detention center in Tapachula.

The action came after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to slap tariffs on Mexican imports unless Mexico does more to stop the passage of migrants through its territory.

Mexico's Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard was in Washington to try to avoid tariffs on Mexican imports threatened by US .Many of the migrants say they're fleeing gang violence, oppressive extortion and corruption in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.

Mexico has responded by offering more options to stay legally on its territory, but most still have the ultimate goal of arriving in the US, where they can earn better pay and in many cases reunite with relatives.
