New Haven: The statue of Christopher Columbus was removed on Wednesday from New Haven's Wooster Square.
It is the first time in over a century, Christopher Columbus statue is not standing on its pedestal.
Around midday, Wednesday, those for and against the Columbus statue removal, went at each other, verbally and sometimes physically.
City officials in New Haven said last week they would have the statue removed after protesters defaced and tore down statues of historic figures during recent demonstrations against racial injustice in cities across the nation.

Most of those pieces have explicit ties to colonialism, slavery and the Confederacy, including imagery of Christopher Columbus and former US presidents who owned slaves.
