Punjab sees 55.44% voting amid sporadic incidents of violence

Punjab saw a polling percentage of 55.44 per cent till 5 pm in 13 Lok Sabha seats. More than 50 per cent turnout was registered in lone Chandigarh Lok Sabha seat, EC app stated. Maximum polling percentage was witnessed at 62.67 in Sangrur and the lowest was in Hoshiarpur at 49.11.    

In the morning, there were some reports of technical glitches in EVMs at several places including Ludhiana, Samana and Moga. Punjab's Chief Electoral Officer S Karuna Raju said eight ballot units, 13 control units, and eight voter-verified paper audit trail have been replaced.

There were also reports of clashes between Congress and Akali-BJP workers in Talwandi Sabo in Bathinda and Gurdaspur. At Talwandi Sabo, Akalis alleged that shots were also fired by ruling party workers.

One person reportedly opened fire

One person was injured as clashes ensued between two groups outside a polling booth in Bathinda's Talwandi Sabo.

"Poll violence took place here, one person opened fire. We have recorded statements and registered a case. Polling has resumed," a police official said.

Voting begins across 13 constituencies in Punjab

Chandigarh: Voting begins in Punjab and Chandigarh in the seventh and final phase of 2019 General elections. 13 seats in Punjab and one in Chandigarh are undergoing polling in the last phase of the Lok Sabha elections.

In the fray for today's elections are Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal, Punjab Congress president Sunil Jakhar and Aam Aadmi Party's Punjab unit chief Bhagwant Mann.

Two Union ministers, Badal's wife Harsimrat Kaur Badal (Bathinda) and Hardeep Singh Puri (Amritsar), are also in the field of 278 candidates, 24 of them women.

BJP MP Kirron Kher is trying to retain the Chandigarh Lok Sabha seat in a three-corner contest, which includes former Union ministers Pawan Kumar Bansal (Congress) and Harmohan Dhawan (AAP).

In adjoining Chandigarh, 36 candidates, including nine women, are contesting. There are 6,46,063 registered voters there, including 21 transgender people.
