Former Assam CM Mahanta, his family boycott polls

Former Assam CM Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and his family had boycotted the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Mahanta and his family members were reportedly dejected with the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) approach towards the Citizenship Amendment Bill.

Guwahati: In an unprecedented development, former Chief Minister of Assam Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and his family boycotted the polls on Thursday. Mahanta and his family were to cast their votes in the Nowgong constituency in during the second phase of 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

While Mahanta termed the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) as the primary reason behind his decision, his party, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) had earlier walked out from the alliance government in the state.

Polls commenced in Assam from the second phase on April 18 and will undergo three more phases in the ongoing 2019 General Elections.
