Two militants killed in J&K's Srinagar

Two unidentified militants have been killed in an encounter which is underway in Danmar area of Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar district. This is the second encounter in Srinagar this month.

Srinagar (J&K): Two unidentified militants were killed during an encounter between security personnel and militants at Alamdar Colony of Srinagar's Danmar area. The encounter had begun in Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar in the early hours of Friday. The militants have been identified as Irfan Ahmad Sofi and Bilal Ahmad, both residents of Natipora in Srinagar. Security forces have also recovered one AK 47, pistol and four grenades from the site of encounter.

"Two (a total of two) local terrorists belonging to Lashkar-e-Taiba were killed. With today's operation, police along with security forces neutralised 78 terrorists in the valley so far this year. In these encounters, most of the terrorists (39 out of 78) were affiliated with proscribed terror outfit LeT followed by Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM), Al-Badr, Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Ansar Gazwat-ul-Hind. 2 terrorists were involved in 3 incidents that took place last month. We were tracking them. Yesterday on confirmation, CRPF & police cordoned off the area. We appealed them to surrender but they refused after which encounter started in which both were killed," IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar said.

The gunfire between militants and security forces in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir continues. Two extremists are in the hiding, sources had said, adding that security forces have cordoned off the area. It is said that the militants hiding in the area had opened fire on the forces during a search operation. This is the second encounter in Srinagar this month.

Earlier, on July 14 (Wednesday), three Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants, including a Pakistani national, were neutralized in an encounter with security forces in the Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir. A gunbattle had broken out in south Kashmir after security forces had launched a cordon-and-search operation following information about the presence of militants.
