The bench hearing the matter included Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and L Nageswara Rao.
After the apex court's judgment, the five activists: Sudhir Dhavale, Surendra Gadling, Shoma Sen, Rona Wilson, and Mahesh Raut, will now have to seek regular bail as they cannot get default bail, which is granted after every 90 days.
The matter was filed in the court by the Maharashtra government to challenge the Bombay High Court order, which had refused to extend the detention of these activists.
The arrested activists have been accused of having links with the Left-wing extremist groups and have been charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
