Kejriwal writes to PM, seeks Bharat Ratna for Bahuguna

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal on Friday wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding that renowned environmentalist Sunderlal Bahuguna be conferred with Bharat Ratna posthumously. The environmentalist, known for his pioneering role in the Chipko movement in Uttarkhand, has breathed his last on May 21.

New Delhi: Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has written a letter to PM Modi demanding that country's highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna, be given to noted environmentalist Sunderlal Bahuguna posthumously. The 94-yr old environmentalist, who had played play a crucial role in the Chipko movement in Uttarakhand had passed away on May 21. CM Kejriwal added that we can never repay the work he has done for the betterment of the country and society.

"This year the country is entering 75th year of Independence. Sunderlal Bahuguna spent his childhood fighting for the freedom of the country in the freedom struggle with the inspiration of Gandhi ji, later on the inspiration of Vinoba Bhave ji, he got engaged in the 'Bhoodan Movement' and 'Gram Swaraj'. At the time when the world was blindly engaged in the exploitation of the environment, at that time, sensing the danger to the world, he dedicated himself to protect the environment. The movement initiated by him started from the Himalayas and reached Karnataka in the south. We are fortunate that a personality like Sunderlal Bahuguna was born in our country," the Delhi CM mentioned in the letter.

Kejriwal further added that the Delhi Government has put up a picture of Sunderlal Bahuguna in the Delhi Assembly, as a tribute to the renowned environmentalist. "Now, in the 75th year of independence, we are honoring the dignitaries who gave the right direction to the nation during the last 75 years, in such a situation, on behalf of the Delhi government, I request that Sunderlal Bahuguna be honored with the title of Bharat Ratna (posthumous)," Kejriwal stated.

Earlier, while unveiling Sunderlal Bahuguna's stone plaque in the Delhi Assembly on July 15, CM Kejriwal had demanded that Sunderlal Bahuguna be awarded the Bharat Ratna and now he has written a letter to the Prime Minister regarding it.
